Cape volleyball moved to 4-2 on the season with a 25-17, 25-13, 25-17 loss to undefeated Newark Charter Sept. 21 on the Vikings’ home hardwood.
Harper Mamele led the Vikings at the net with nine kills. Sophomore libero Amara Fruchtman and senior Ava Calciano bumped 22 and 12 digs, respectively.
Calciano, Camilla Willis, Brielle Ross, Amalia Fruchtman, Rylee Ockels and Emme Smith teamed for 14 kills. Smith garnered 15 assists.
“This match will teach us not to be overly confident,” said Ross. “We have work to do on Monday.”
“They are a great all-around team,” said junior Mallory Terhune. “We need to read the ball better, and communicate more and work together as a team.”
“This match was certainly a wake-up call for our varsity team,” said Cape head coach Tyler Coupe. “Newark Charter is the most physical team we’ve seen thus far in our season. They have size across the net in all six rotations. There really wasn’t a blocker who was undersized. We preach consistent pressure and work a lot on out-of-system work, so that was a bummer to see it not be put into live play. It’s a helpful match to show what work still lies ahead for us to improve as we enter the second third of our season.”
The Vikings’ JV squad took the long way to victory, scoring a three-set 28-31, 25-17, 15-12 win to move to 3-3 on the season.
The Cape freshman team won its third straight contest, staying undefeated at 3-0. They took down the Patriots 25-19, 27-25.
“The JV and freshman teams played really brilliant matches that created a lot of buzz in our gym,” Coupe said.
The Cape varsity travels to Seaford Tuesday, Sept. 24, before returning home Thursday, Sept. 26, for a match with Milford.
