This photo was taken by Michael Zajic at Mill Pond Garden, a nonprofit public botanical garden on Red Mill Pond near Lewes, of a native Blue Jay on a native Winterberry, Ilex verticillata, on a sunny day. These native deciduous hollies sustain and attract many kinds of birds in winter, require a male plant nearby to have berries, come in red or orange berry colors, tolerate soggy sites, and prefer sun but do well enough in part shade, too.
