Lewes Elementary Spanish immersion students extol bilingual education

As they prepare to continue their world language studies in middle school, Lewes Elementary fifth-graders Joseph Bradshaw and Justin Travis submitted letters to the editor citing the benefits of a bilingual education.

The Cape district first launched the Spanish immersion program in Milton and H.O. Brittingham elementary kindergarten classes. The program was expanded to Mariner Middle School this year when the first cohort of learners entered sixth grade. 

The program included other district elementaries the second year, and Beacon and Fred Thomas middle schools will welcome their first Spanish immersion students in the 2024-25 school year.

At the elementary level, immersion students spend half of their instructional day learning in Spanish. In middle school, about 30% of a student’s day is spent learning in Spanish, and students take advanced-level immersion language courses to prepare them for high school language studies.

Spanish immersion is an amazing learning class for kids! It can teach them many good skills to have in life, so you should put your child in Spanish immersion! 

One reason is that they can use their language skills to go on many adventures. For example, you and your child can go to a Spanish-speaking country, then they can speak or translate the two languages in the country.

Another reason is that it helps kids mentally. KSS Preschool says, “It improves cognitive, social and emotional skills,” which are all crucial skills in one another’s life. Another reason is that it makes kids more connected to the language. kingschools.org says, “Students develop a deeper understanding of the language, culture and people who speak it.” 

Another reason is that Spanish is one of the easiest languages to learn. According to homeschoolspanishacadamy, “Spanish is generally one of the easiest languages to learn.” Another reason is because group learners tend to have a better understanding and better learning of the language. The text of lingo.edu.sg states, “Many learners benefit greatly from the conversations that occur in group classes.”

The benefits of the Spanish immersion program

There are many benefits to being in the Spanish immersion program. I went in the program because I felt that it would help me in my career to be able to speak multiple languages and also because once you learn a second language, it’s often easier to learn a third and fourth language. 

In my view, learning more languages will allow students to communicate with more and more people and communities. The more you can communicate with others, the more you will learn about them, their culture, their experiences and their viewpoints. That is why I believe that the more people are able to communicate with each other, the more they will get to know each other. The more people know about each other, the more understanding and compassionate they will be, and that will make the world a much better place.

There are many ways that I’ve already been able to use my Spanish knowledge. One example was when my grandparents had a new deck put on their house. Some of the construction workers only spoke Spanish, and my grandparents asked me to help translate. It was really fun helping my grandparents and the builders communicate, and I felt so proud to put my skills to good use. 

Another example is when I got invited to one of my friend’s birthday parties. He and his family's first language is Spanish, and most of them only knew a tiny bit of English. Another friend and I were the only non-native speakers at the party, and because we were both in the Spanish immersion program, we were both able to communicate with everyone else in their native language.

The immersion program will also help me in the future. Speaking more than one language can help raise your scores on college admissions tests like the SAT and ACT, and taking AP Spanish in high school can help me to earn college credits before I even graduate. One of my dream careers is to be a lawyer and if I am bilingual, I will be able to work with a more diverse group of clients, help more people, and be more successful. In general, I also feel that being bilingual will make me a more desirable candidate for any job since I will be able to work with people who speak both English and Spanish.

Those are the benefits of the Spanish immersion program. But at the end of the day, I believe that the program is just a great opportunity for students to learn more, experience Spanish culture, and develop a skill that will benefit them and their community now and in the future.

Hay muchos beneficios al estar en el programa de inmersión en español. Entré al programa porque sentí que me ayudaría en mi carrera poder hablar varios idiomas y también porque una vez que aprende un segundo idioma, suele ser más fácil aprender un tercer y un cuarto idioma. 

En mi opinión, aprender más idiomas permitirá a los estudiantes comunicarse con más personas y comunidades. Cuanto más pueda comunicarse con los demás, más aprenderá sobre ellos, su cultura, sus experiencias y sus puntos de vista. Por eso creo que cuanto más puedan comunicarse las personas entre sí, más se conocerán. Cuanto más se conozcan las personas, más comprensivas y compasivas serán, y eso hará del mundo un lugar mucho mejor.

Hay muchas maneras en las que ya he podido utilizar mis conocimientos de español. Un ejemplo fue cuando mis abuelos hicieron instalar una terraza nueva en su casa. Algunos de los trabajadores de la construcción solo hablaban español y mis abuelos me pidieron que los ayudara a traducir. Fue muy divertido ayudar a mis abuelos y a los constructores a comunicarse, y me sentí muy orgulloso de poder aprovechar mis habilidades. 

Otro ejemplo es cuando un amigo me invitó a su fiesta de cumpleaños. El primer idioma de él y su familia es el español, y la mayoría de ellos solo sabían un poquito de inglés. Otro amigo y yo éramos los únicos hablantes no nativos en la fiesta y como ambos estábamos en el programa de inmersión en español, ambos pudimos comunicarnos con todos los demás en su idioma nativo.

El programa de inmersión también me ayudará en el futuro. Hablar más de un idioma puede ayudar a mejorar sus puntajes en los exámenes de admisión a la universidad como el SAT y el ACT, y tomar español AP en la escuela secundaria puede ayudarme a obtener créditos universitarios antes de graduarme. Una de las carreras de mis sueños es ser abogado y, si soy bilingüe, podré trabajar con un grupo más diverso de clientes, ayudar a más personas y tener más éxito. En general, también siento que ser bilingüe me convertirá en un candidato más deseable para cualquier trabajo ya que podré trabajar con personas que hablan inglés e español.

Esos son los beneficios del programa de inmersión en español. Pero al final del día, creo que el programa es simplemente una gran oportunidad para que los estudiantes aprendan más, experimenten la cultura española y desarrollen una habilidad que los beneficiará a ellos y a su comunidad ahora y en el futuro.
