Dewey Beach closed to swimmers

The ocean remains closed to swimmers in Dewey Beach after police found another syringe without a needle had washed ashore the afternoon of Sept. 16, said Town Manager Bill Zolper.

About 4 p.m., Sept. 15, town and police officials made the decision to prohibit swimming in the ocean until further notice after town officials had discovered a syringe had washed ashore. People are still permitted to walk on the beach and should wear shoes while on the beach, Zolper said, noting the origin of the medical waste is unknown.

Anyone who finds medical waste on the beach is asked to call Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control at 800-662-8802 or the Dewey Beach Police Department at 302-227-1110.
