Beideman to be awarded the Governor’s Outstanding Volunteer Award
Going Pop Warner - I have this belief that a hefty percentage of football play callers are easily bored at “pounding the rock” and will quickly delve deep into what I call their Pop Warner playbook. Dover back in 1994 came out against Cape and it was blast right then left marching down the field. Coach George Glenn said, ”I hope they don’t keep this up the whole game.” Right on cue, the Senators went option right, put the ball on the ground, and Jack Frederick of Cape picked it up and raced 80 yards for a touchdown, causing Eduardo Saez to say, “Jack you’re almost as fast as me.” A year later Cape was locked in a scoreless half at Sussex Central when Phil DeSabitino was coach. Again I said to Glenn, “Pop Warner is in the house; I can feel it.” Central flared a backward lateral pass left from its own one-yard line and Brian Kugelmann stepped in front of it for a Cape touchdown. The moral of the story when calling plays is, “Don’t get fancy unless it’s prom night.”
Whoa Nellie - I stood dead center on the scout defense last Wednesday at Cape’s practice with a 200-millimeter lens trying to find the football, which I basically could not. I can tell you that peeps in my old world don’t move that fast unless someone yells, “Buffet is ready,” and just an instant before my brain could process flow away throw back across the middle, a full-speed, rather large receiver was bearing down on my rigidity lack of elasticity frozen-spined self. Like riding a bike or roller skating, you never forget, so I gave the guy a forearm to the chest and knocked him down, then offered my hand, apologizing for being where I wasn’t supposed to be, which pretty much defines most of my days.
Ain’t no Kevin Kolb - On an NFL ESPN program when it was suggested to Chris Carter and Keyshawn Johnson that like Kevin Kolb of the Eagles, they too must have had a bad half of football, Carter snapped, “Hey, I ain’t no Kevin Kolb,” and Johnson added, “I’m not either.” Carter was let go by Buddy Ryan of the Eagles in 1990, with Buddy saying, “All he does is catch touchdowns.” Carter was said to be more interested in alcohol and cocaine than practice and of course straightened out his life, and Keyshawn was deactivated in 2003 by Tampa coach John Gruden because of his disrupted behavior; in fact, Johnson brags that he set the stage and was the first diva wide receiver. “In 1996 I was the queen of the ball, the princess, whatever. And all those guys have come after me.” So yes, those guys are Kevin Kolb and both want Kolb replaced by Mike Vick and Kolb must be thinking, “Where and why didn’t I go wrong?”
Snippets - Coaches and schools are the major publicity arms for their sports teams and often do a tepid, nonenthusiastic job promoting their own teams.
The website websites4sports.com has a place for junior varsity results and highlights which includes who scored and/or who had outstanding defensive games. Mostly this information is totally missing.
A parent recently suggested to me, “I know football is king,” and all I can say is, “Football is dragging 10 straight losing seasons behind them,” so if it is The King, who is everyone else? The Rehoboth ALS walk begins at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 18, not 10 a.m. as I previously reported numerous times.
There is an 11:15 ferry leaving Lewes for those planning on catching the Cape at Cape May game, which begins at 2 p.m. Figure out the logistics; what am I, a travel agent?
