Biden soaking up sun at beach house this coming weekend

President slated to be in town May 30 through June 3
May 29, 2024

Like he did during his years as statewide elected official, President Joe Biden is expected to be at both ends of the state over the next few days.

According to the White House Week Ahead Guidance and Press Schedule issued May 27, the president will be in Wilmington beginning Wednesday, May 29, following a campaign event earlier in the day in Philadelphia, Pa., with Vice President Kamala Harris.

The guidance says the following day, Thursday, May 30, Biden and first lady Jill Biden will head to their North Shores home, where they’re expected to stay for the majority of the weekend.

The president will make a short trip back to Washington, D.C., Friday, May 31, to welcome the Kansas City Chiefs to celebrate their victory in Super Bowl LVIII. Following the celebration, the president is slated to return to his home about a mile north of Rehoboth Beach.

The White House hasn’t said what times the president will be in town, but the Federal Aviation Administration issued two flight restriction notices for the area May 28. The first notice puts a restriction in place beginning at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, May 30, and ending at 10 a.m., Friday, May 31. The second notice begins at 7:30 p.m., May 31, and ends at 5 p.m., Monday, June 3.

This will be the fifth time Biden has been in town this year – he visited in January, February, April and earlier this month.

Here’s a list of security measures taken when Biden is in town:

  • Gordons Pond users could see restrictions. The park’s parking lot is just around the corner from Biden’s home and is used as a landing site for Marine One.
  • If Biden decides to drive, motorists on Route 1 should be prepared for delays. By road, there’s really only one way to his house – southbound on Route 1, then through Rehoboth Beach. As the presidential motorcade makes its way south, police and state personnel sit at all intersections blocking traffic.
  • The FAA’s temporary flight restrictions limit use of the airspace – including drones – from Dover south to Ocean City, Md., and west to the Maryland border.
  • The Coast Guard establishes security zones in the ocean area immediately in front of North Shores beach and in the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal.

It looks like the weather is going to be pretty nice for the majority of this weekend, so Biden will likely be out and about at least a couple of times. If he does, send photos to reporter Chris Flood at cflood@capegazette.com.
