Cape boys’ basketball falls to Stephen Decatur

January 6, 2025

The Cape boys’ basketball team hosted undefeated Stephen Decatur Jan. 3, and the Seahawks came out of the game with a 61-56 victory. The Vikings move to 4-3, while the Seahawks are 5-0.

“It was a super-exciting environment, and we loved the community support,” said Cape head coach Steve Re. “I’m extremely proud of the guys. I thought our last time out against Broadneck we took too many bad threes, but I thought we attacked the basket pretty well today. We shared the ball pretty well. We missed a lot of shots. We missed a ton of free throws. So ultimately that’s on us. I thought we played hard enough, thought we played together enough, and some of the things we’ve been working on we showed today. I hope we can continue to mature.”

Senior Damian Robinson paced the offense with 15 points each and grabbed 12 rebounds. Sophomore Jameson Tingle hit for 15 and seven rebounds. Sophomore Stephen Sivels added 11 points, three rebounds and three steals.

“I felt good with how we played,” said Sivels. “I may have tried a little too hard to make the steals when I should have just stayed in front and played defense. We have to keep our heads up and play a little harder.”

Junior Braxton Figgs scored nine points and garnered seven boards.

“We definitely strive to play together,” said Figgs. “It’s one of our goals at practice – team building. We are all friends outside basketball, so we try to transfer that over into the games. We did pretty well in the third and fourth quarters. If we had come out of the box firing in the first quarter, the game would have turned out differently.”

The Vikings went 2-for-19 from behind the three-point line, shot 32% from the field and were 12-for-21 at the charity stripe.

“We shot poorly, and one of our best players only had 19 minutes of playing time because of foul trouble,” Re said. “We have three losses on the season, and each are all to excellent teams. Moving into conference play, I believe we are on the right track.”

The JV Vikings came from 15 points down in the second quarter to defeat the JV Seahawks 30-28. Freshman Nick Ryan and Nathan Re scored 14 and 11 points, respectively.

The Vikings will welcome Smyrna Tuesday, Jan. 7. Game time for JV is 5:15 p.m.
