Cape district students receive Scholastic art awards
The Cape Henlopen School District announced several of its talented students were recognized for exceptional artistic achievements in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
The contest has celebrated young creative talent since 1923, and it receives thousands of submissions from across the country.
Two students from Beacon Middle School and seven students from Cape Henlopen High School earned recognition based on originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.
Austin Crichlow, a Cape senior, received a Gold Key for his piece titled "Dragon Coil Pot,” entered in the ceramics and glass category, as well as honorable mentions for “Final Charcoal Self Portrait,” in drawing and illustration, and “Le Ciel au-dessus du Château de Versailles,” in digital art.
Cape senior Sofia Giovannitti received a Gold Key for her piece titled “When My Heart Hurts,” painting.
Caine Marlette, a junior at Cape, received a Gold Key for his piece “Baby,” drawing and illustration, and a Silver Key for “Bus Ride,” also drawing and illustration.
Diego Pereda-Garcia, a Cape 10th-grader, received a Silver Key for “Creativescapes” in drawing and illustration.
Gabriel Blackwood, a junior at Cape High, received an honorable mention for “Self Portrait in Pink,” painting.
Jasmine Cuffee, a Cape junior, received an honorable mention for “Modern Ancient,” ceramics and glass.
Gianna Razze, a Cape junior, received an honorable mention for “Charcoal Self Portrait,” drawing and illustration.
From Beacon Middle School, seventh-grader Savannah Henderson received two Gold Key awards for “Blinded Messenger” and “The Deep Unknown,” both in the digital art category. Beacon eighth-grade student Erica Hippolyte received an honorable mention for “The Failed Protector” in the drawing and illustration category
“We are incredibly proud of our students for their dedication and creativity,” said Alexander Louvis, Beacon Middle School art teacher. “These awards highlight their hard work and the outstanding support from their educators, peers and families who inspire and nurture their talents.”
“We are thrilled to have our students’ art showcased at the Delaware State University Arts Center/Gallery through Friday, Feb. 14,” said Ragan Callahan, Cape Henlopen High School art teacher. “We encourage everyone to visit the gallery and see this incredible talent on display firsthand.”
