Despite the temptation of a Mets/Phillies game played just minutes away Sept. 14, the Cape football team was all business on their trip to Wilmington, coming back south with a 48-6 win over Delcastle and a 2-0 record under their belts.
“We have more players, we have probably more talent, but they're doing a nice job; they're young,” said Cape coach Mike Frederick of his opponent. “Coach [Kerry] Galloway does a really good job in the community and with these kids. I love the way he coaches his kids. But again, if we lined up and took care of our business, took care of the football, we should have been OK.”
Aside from an interception and a scoop-and-score by Delcastle, the Vikings handled their duties and protected the pill. Starting with a blocked punt, Cape made sure the game was never in doubt. With a game tape possessing little redeemable value, Frederick did note his offense executed well in the beginning.
“We took advantage of a couple plays early where I thought, through our formations, we were able to get numbers, and that worked out the way we had hoped,” he said.
Forcing a punt on Delcastle’s first drive, Cape blocked the kick. On the very next play, quarterback Jameson Tingle scrambled into the end zone to start the scoring party.
“We had a game plan coming into it,” Tingle said. “We followed it, we executed and had a little moments of improvisation that worked out for us.”
Jayden Messick joined Tingle on the scoresheet on Cape’s next drive with an impressive run through a few Cougars defenders. Anthony Francis must have seen it as a challenge, because the junior took a Tingle pass on Cape’s third drive, juked away from three defenders on the sideline and scored.
With Delcastle down three scores, any chance for a comeback was quashed quickly thanks to the Batson boys on defense. Tre is the junior lineman, while sophomore Oz operates as a linebacker and running back. Neither is fun to run into.
“There are always opportunities to get better; don't ever doubt your opponent,” Tre said. “Just go out here and work.”
With the defense giving him the ball back at nearly every turn, Tingle rewarded their efforts. The sophomore found junior Amari Jackson in the end zone for his third touchdown and the Vikings’ fourth of the first quarter.
Continuing to expand the team’s lead, Messick punched another ticket into the end zone before fellow running back Quardell Richards wrapped up the scoring. Cape led 42-0 at the half following a goal-line stand to keep Delcastle off the scoreboard.
The Vikings used the padding to get younger players valuable experience, reserving the final two quarters for them to battle with Delcastle’s varsity. Although the Cougars prevented the shutout, Cape managed to keep the ball in Delcastle territory for much of the second half.
Sophomore quarterback Noah Miafodzyeu punctuated the victory and Cape headed back south with a 48-6 win in hand and a renewed focus on their Friday, Sept. 20 opponent, Lake Forest.
