January 13, 2017

The Cape girls’ indoor track & field team finished second at the weekly Snow Hill Bayside League meet at the Worcester County Rec Center, scoring 77 points. From the Henlopen Conference, Caesar Rodney won the girls’ meet with 99 points, while Smyrna finished seventh with 40 points, Sussex Tech was 10th with 26.5 points, Lake Forest was 11th with 15 points and Seaford was 13th with 3.5 points.

Individually for the Vikings, freshman Meredith Lockwood scored 13.5 points to lead Cape, winning the 800 meters in 2:39, leading off the 800 relay in 2:34, and running on the third-place finishing 400 relay with a split of 1:07.

“Meredith is one tough kid, and she races like a kid with four or five years’ experience, and she is only a freshman,” said coach Gilbert Maull. “She has a combination of speed and endurance that you don’t see in a lot of young kids, and she is tough to beat.”

Thrower Ce’yra Middleton won the shot put with a toss of 34-feet-10.5-inches, while teammate Mac Parker was fourth in 30-feet-one-half-inch.

Cape girls had their best showing in the three relays, as the 800 team of Lockwood (2:34), Zoe Callard (2:41), Jackie Cannon (2:36) and Olivia Brozefsky (2:41) ran 10:35.5 for a second-place finish. The 200 relay of Vienna Iacona (0:28), Timesha Cannon (0:28), Cam Smith (0:30) and Chakyriah Wright (0:29) ran a season-best 1:56.1 for third place. The 400 relay team of Michiah Rushin (1:10), Chakyriah Wright (1:09), Meredith Lockwood (1:07) and Vienna Iacona (1:10) was third with a season-best time of 4:38.9.

Jackie Cannon ran a season-best of 5:54.8 in the 1,600 meters for fourth, while Olivia Brozefsky finished fifth in 6:04.8. Chakyriah Wright was fifth in the triple jump in 30-feet-10-inches, while freshman Timesha Cannon was fifth in the long jump in a season-best of 15-feet-6-inches. Rose Minni, also just a freshman, was sixth in the triple jump in 30-feet-2.5-inches , while pole vaulter Leah Marsh was sixth in 6-feet-6-inches. Marcella Sabbagh was seventh in the high jump in 4-feet-6-inches, while Cannon was seventh in the 300 meters in 46 seconds and 55 meters in 7.83 seconds. Sam Wyatt was seventh in the 55 hurdles in 10.12.

“The girls continue to give us season-best performances, and today we had 16 of the 20 girls score in the meet, which is nice to see when most of the team is made up of freshman and sophomore athletes,” Maull said. “Scoring 77 points without Darby Klopp, who was sick, is an impressive performance today.”

The Caesar Rodney boys also won the team title with a dominating score of 143 points, while the Cape Vikings were sixth with 37 points. Smyrna was seventh with 32 points, while Lake Forest was ninth with 31 points, and Sussex Tech was 10th with 30 points.

Individually for the Vikings, Jacob Osborne led the way with a second-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 37-feet-5.5-inches, while Greg Boyce was third in the 3,200 meters in 10:41.6. Also finishing third was Ryan Head in the pole vault with 10-feet-6-inches, while Garrett Elgin was fifth in the triple at 37-feet-2-inches.  The Vikings’ 400 relay team of Boyce, Kazuki Carroll, Head and Christian Partlow ran 4:04.5 for sixth place, while Boyce was seventh in the 800 meters in 2:16.2.  The 800 relay was also sixth overall with a time of 9:54.2. Davion West-Nailon was seventh in the shot put in 33-feet-11-inches for the Vikings, while Elgin was eighth in the long jump in 17-feet-8-inches. Bryan Ciabattoni was eighth in the 1,600 meters in 5:25.5 for a season best.

Boyce was the Vikings’ high scorer at 8.75 points on the day.

“The boys are working hard and we keep improving our performances, and we have a lot of first-year athletes,” said coach Matt Lindell.

The girls’ team will travel to the Bear Invite Sunday, Jan. 15, at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa., with more than 25 teams scheduled to compete. Next week’s Snow Hill meet will be for only Bayside Conference teams, so the Vikings get a break, but will leave Friday, Jan. 20, to compete in the New Balance Games in New York City.
