Cape grads awarded Paul Kares funds for music education
Paul Kares recently awarded $2,500 to help pay for music lessons for twin musicians.
“Thanks to this grant, Darius and Adonest Weldon, who graduated in June 2024, can continue their training,” said Chris Burkhart, director of Cape Henlopen High School bands since 2013.
The funds will go directly to Terry Alvey, the musicians’ private teacher.
“There are a lot of challenges to overcome when you seek a career in the arts,” Burkhart said. “Paul Kares has helped these talented musicians overcome one of them.”
Darius plays the trumpet; Adonest plays the trombone. Last September, they joined fellow student Kathryn Costello on a musical tour through France, Switzerland, Germany and Belgium.
“They were members of the CHHS marching band, wind ensemble and jazz bands,” Burkhart said. “They’re wonderful, hardworking young men and strong musicians. Getting to continue studying privately after high school will be a huge support in helping them reach their musical goals as professionals.”
The brothers are equally well-known for their character and leadership skills. They received recognition from the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice for their efforts and dedication to excellence.
Founded by musician Paul Cullen and businessman Jim Rivette, Paul Kares supports young people pursuing culinary and performing arts careers.
“Many of Paul Kares’ contributions go to young people in school or college,” said Rivette, the organization’s president. “This award demonstrates the need to support people no longer benefiting from instruction in an educational facility.”
