Cape High student wins Optimist Club essay contest
The Optimist Club of Sussex County awarded two local high school students with cash prizes in its annual essay contest awards program Jan. 16.
Cape High junior Harley Sherman received first place for her essay contest based on the theme, "Who is an everyday hero that brings out the optimism in you?"
Harley was awarded a $600 cash prize for the honor, and second-place winner Landen Tripp of Laurel High School was awarded a $300 cash prize.
Harley did a wonderful job of articulating this year's theme, said Optimist Club President Shelley McBride.
“She expressed herself well through the essay and deserved the honor of first place,” McBride said.
The Optimist Club of Sussex County has been participating in the Optimist Essay Contest for six years. Optimist International is one of the world’s largest service club organizations with 80,000 adult and youth members in 2,500 clubs in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico and throughout the world.
