Thanksgiving has many traditions, and the Cape Henlopen boys’ lacrosse team Turkey Day pickup game is one that will live forever.
More than 30 players took part in the contest this year. Cape graduates from as far back as the 1990s played for friendship and love of the game.
Players were split up by graduation year, with odd years on one side and even years on the other. The score wasn’t kept and it really didn’t matter, as the contest was about getting together and sharing stories of the glory days and hopes for the future.
“This program has meant a great deal to a lot of people,” said Cape head coach Geoff Shupard. “The Cape lacrosse history is very rich and runs deep. The alumni pickup game is a great opportunity to bring the current players together with some of the guys who made us who we are, and also for a lot of people to reconnect with each other. I love that so many of the guys made it out for a great day. I’m so proud of all of them. We are a family.”
“It’s awesome to get the Cape lacrosse family back together every year and reconnect with great people and friends,” said 2023 grad Joe Coveleski. “Plus, it’s always fun to be on the same field as my brother, so it’s a cool moment for sure.”
"The alumni pickup game was tons of fun this year,” said present-day goalie Mason Trench. “It's been a lifelong dream of mine to play with my dad, and it really meant a lot to me."
