Cape school board elections: Who’s running, voter eligibility and more

Six candidates vie for three seats in May
March 14, 2025

Six candidates have filed for the Cape Henlopen School District school board election, which will take place Tuesday, May 13. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The deadline for candidates to file for election was March 7. The elections are nonpartisan.

The two candidates vying for the at-large seat are Chris Lovenguth and incumbent William “Bill” Collick.

There are three candidates running for the District C seat: Andy Lewis, Patty Maull and Laura Parsons.

For the District B seat, incumbent Jason Bradley is the only candidate running. Per Delaware Code, when only one candidate files for the election for a given school board seat, that candidate is declared elected and no election is held.

The at-large and District B seats are both four-year terms, expiring on June 30, 2029. The term for the District C seat also expires on June 30, 2029, but is only three years long, because it’s filling the remainder of an unexpired term.

Janet Maull-Martin vacated the seat in August last year, after which the board appointed the Rev. Marjorie Belmont to the position. Belmont is not running in the upcoming election.

To be eligible to vote in public school board elections in Delaware, one must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be a citizen of the U.S. and Delaware
  2. Live within the school district for which the election is being conducted
  3. Be at least 18 years old on or before election day.

Voters must also provide proof of identity and address, which may include a Delaware driver’s license, Delaware ID card, work ID card with photo and home address, and/or U.S. postal material with street address.

According to the Delaware Department of Elections, voters may also present other reasonable documents, which either alone or with another document identify the person and their address. Examples include a Delaware vehicle registration card, a recent utility bill, a rent receipt, a signed Social Security card and/or a telephone directory listing in a current phone book.
