About 100 students from Cape district schools gathered at the high school Feb. 21 to attend a Special Olympics Delaware leadership program designed to increase inclusion.
Jon Buzby, Special Olympics Delaware senior director of unified champion schools, said all Cape schools were represented except Beacon Middle, which had a previously scheduled field trip.
The purpose of the conference, Buzby said, was for students to generate ideas to become more inclusive that they could each bring back to their respective schools.
Each school group included at least one student with an intellectual disability to help contribute to the workshop-style event, Buzby said.
Four main components of inclusive programming include unified sports, whole school engagement, inclusive youth leadership, and sustainability, said Nate Threatts, Special Olympics Delaware manager of unified champion schools.
Making small changes leads to a huge impact, Threatts told students.
