The Cape unified basketball team played its most complete game of the season Feb. 6, in a 48-54 loss to visiting Indian River.
“It was a great game against IR,” said Cape head coach Katie Collick. “They are a very competitive team, but our team brought some fieriness tonight that we haven't seen before, and it was awesome. It was a fun game to coach, and watch and listen to the players cheer on the bench. You can just see everyone get into the game. We continued to play our game and rotated all 26 players in the game. We were down a few due to injury and a sickness, but kept it for the spirit of the game.”
Danny Gartman and Austin Hastings led the Vikings with eight points each. Zane Richardson tallied seven. Luke Archer hit for six. Aiden Curran and Norman Rust scored four, while X Zimmer, Ronald LeRoy, Jaxon Benton and Dalen Daminger each had a bucket.
“Danny Gartman had so much passion on the court tonight and even wanted to bring the ball up the court, which is very rare for him,” Collick said. “Austin Hastings did a great job of finding his spot in the lane and hit four buckets for us as well. He has come a long way, from a hard shot to a nice soft touch. Zane Richardson and Jaxon Benton did a great job at making smart decisions with the ball. And as always, all of our partners did an amazing job of supporting each and every athlete out there.”
“It was a great game,” said Archer. “I love playing with all of my friends. It was tough competition. It was great.”
“I had a great time in the game,” said Hastings. “I would not replace this feeling with anything. I love playing on the team.”
The unified team will host Milford Thursday, Feb. 13, for Senior Day.
