Central volleyball players share strong bond
In the world of high school volleyball, two exceptional athletes have emerged as beacons of talent and perseverance: Paige Nicholson and Julianne Bounds.
As freshmen at Sussex Central, they have made a significant impact on their team, finishing the regular season as the top offensive and defensive players among all freshmen statewide based on regular-season statistics. Their journey exemplifies the power of friendship, dedication and an unwavering passion for the sport. This season, Sussex Central showcased a notably young roster featuring three starting ninth-graders, with Paige and Julianne serving as co-captains, infusing the team with fresh energy and enthusiasm.
“I love the way that Paige and Julianne approach the game of volleyball,” said Central coach Mike Adams. “They are true competitors who battle for every point and always lead by example. They are a pleasure to coach.”
Paige and Julianne first crossed paths in seventh grade during volleyball tryouts at Georgetown Middle School. From that moment, their unique chemistry on the court was evident. Their shared love for the game quickly forged a strong bond, making them inseparable both on and off the court. Over the summer, they dedicated more than 100 hours to practicing together, honing their skills and deepening their friendship. This commitment not only enhanced their gameplay, but also solidified their partnership, setting the stage for their remarkable debut in high school volleyball.
Paige and Julianne played pivotal roles as eighth-graders in leading Georgetown Middle School’s volleyball team to a 9-0 undefeated season. They also excelled during a competitive travel volleyball season and capped off their track & field campaign with multiple podium finishes. Paige was awarded MVP, while Julianne received accolades from their coach for Most Resilient and Most Consistent.
Their commitment to excellence continued when they were accepted into Sussex Central's International Baccalaureate program. Over the summer, they secured spots to play for the local Sandsharks Volleyball Club, where they won multiple medals alongside their teammates in local and regional tournaments.
“Paige and Julianne are a great addition to the successful beach volleyball club that has produced two national champions in the last five years,” said Sandsharks Club Director Jonathan Skolnik. “They are so athletic, always work hard, have great attitudes and clearly enjoy the sport.”
This dedication and hard work seamlessly translated into their high school season, where they emerged as key team contributors. Paige's creative offensive play resulted in 171 kills and Julianne's dependable defensive techniques led to 227 digs, and both were named to the 2024 Henlopen All-Conference team.
Beyond their athletic achievements, the bond between Paige and Julianne has been a crucial element of their success. Their friendship has fostered a positive team environment, inspiring their teammates to strive for greatness.
As they look to the future, both players are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. With their sights set on college volleyball and beyond, Paige and Julianne are determined to continue their journey, fueled by their passion for the game and their mutual support. They will kick off their club season in December with FreeState Volleyball Club of Snow Hill, Md.
