The local Certified Running Nuts group took part in the popular Key West Half Marathon among 4,000 participants last weekend in Key West, Fla. It was the 19th annual event, with more than 50 CRN runners making the trip south. Mike Sewell of Camden won the male masters title in a time of 1:24:19, while Bobby Hutton of Rehoboth in the 50-54 group was third in 1:38:21. Mardiny Ung of Elizabethtown, Pa., was second in the 50-54 female group in 1:46:50, while Mary Beth Evans of Rehoboth was seventh in 1:56:23. Jules Woodall of Lewes ran 2:15:16 for 11th in the 65-69 group, while Bill McArthur of Lewes was second in the 75-79 group in 2:39:39. Alberto Castillo finished fourth in the 5K 75-plus age group and wife Stella won the 75-plus age group in the 5K run.
Interesting that the first across the line was a female runner and a good one at that, as Julie Stackhouse of Jacksonville, Fla., won the half in 1:19:03.
Congratulations to all on the CRN team.
Striders head south
This past weekend, the Seashore Striders were in Miami Beach, Fla., producing a 5K run for the PICS-AICS Convention that was held at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel.
The Pediatric and Adult Interventional Cardiac Symposium attracts the best cardiac doctors from around the world. This year’s meeting was sponsored by Rush University Medical Center and had a clinical focus with addition of taped cases to sessions on both congenital and structural heart disease, as well as live case demonstrations from around the globe.
This year, 124 runners and walkers registered for the 5K that was held at 6 a.m. on a paved north/south path that separates the hotel strip and the beach. As the runners made the turnaround and headed back to the start and finish area, the sun was rising, making it a nice backdrop for the event.
Since I have been with the PICS-AICS Symposium, we have produced events at the National Harbor, and in Washington, D.C., Chicago, Las Vegas and Miami Beach, twice.
The overall male winner this time around was Allen Ligon of Atlanta, Ga., crossing the line in 17:50.2, while Ralf Holzer was not far behind, finishing in 18:00.8. Third went to Stephane Moniotte of Adamstown, Pa., in 19:10.0. On the female side, Sara Stavnes-Mattson of St. Paul, Minn., won the race in a time of 23:27.7, while Vivian Dimas of Dallas, Texas, was close behind in 23:29.1. Third place went to Mary Porisch of San Antonio, Texas, in a time of 24:51.3.
Runners participated in the event from all around the world, and it was very interesting to see the differences in the countries and the cultures relating to what they wore, where they wore their bib and how they ran the race. Congratulations to all finishers at the annual PICS-AICS 5K Run. Results can be found at seashorestriders.com.
