Cape Henlopen School District, the school board and the Sussex Consortium recognized Dolle’s Candyland as the Community Champion for January.
Tom Ibach, the third generation of his family to own the business, accepted the award at the district board meeting Jan. 23.
The Sussex Consortium partnered with Dolle’s for the first time several years ago, and school officials said it didn’t take long for it to become one of their favorite vocational sites. During students’ scheduled shifts, they’re responsible for filling and weighing the boxes accurately and placing the lids correctly.
“Students are learning to collaborate as a team and maintain a pace that keeps up with their coworkers,” board member Jason Bradley said on behalf of the school district at the meeting. “At the end of each shift, students can choose candy or popcorn, allowing staff to reinforce lessons about manners and portion control.”
Ibach and his wife Florica Balas are two of the most compassionate people you’ll ever meet, Bradley continued.
“They are patient and kind, always taking into consideration how they can support our students and staff. The Sussex Consortium is incredibly grateful to have Dolle’s open its doors to our program. Their ongoing kindness and support over the years have significantly impacted our students’ lives, and we are thankful for their generosity.”
