Epworth UMC to host Food Waste Awareness Sunday Oct. 28
Epworth United Methodist Church will hold its inaugural observance of Food Waste Awareness Sunday Oct. 28, at the church, 19285 Holland Glade Road, Rehoboth Beach.
A service honoring donors and recognizing volunteers will be held at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Food Rescue Buffet at 10:30 a.m. The buffet will feature some of the donated food that helps feed those in need in the community. Most people do not know that as much as 40 percent of America’s food supply ends up in dumpsters, and more than half of that is perfectly eatable.
The Epworth Food Rescue Program, working with an expanding number of donors such as grocery stores, restaurants, orchards and others, has saved more than 60,000 pounds of food so far this year. The food is picked up, sorted, stored and distributed by a growing team of volunteers from within and outside the church, including Seaside Jewish Community. The saved food is used by Epworth’s Food and Love Soup Kitchen and Good Samaritan Program, or distributed to other recipients, such as the Community Resource Center and other outreach programs.
Epworth’s food rescue goal is to end hunger through reducing waste in the local community. For more information, call or text Gerrie Boisjoly at 302-228-3766 or go to Food Rescue at Epworth on Facebook.
There is no admission charge for this event. Attendees can learn how to help neighbors and the environment by reducing food waste.
