Flashbacks and hallucinations of former Cape students real and imagined
Mack and Ike - Taking finish-line photos I was slightly surprised to see 20-year-old former Cape soccer player Bryan Mack cruise past me in 20 minutes flat. Soon afterward I said to myself, “The first Afro-American; get him in focus - how come he runs like a hurdler? Maybe because he is Isaiah Brisco, a two-time Delaware state champion in the hurdles, now a multifaceted aspiring decathlete for the Delaware State Hornets.”
Jill jumps into focus - I was taking race pictures in Dewey when out of a side street steps my niece, Jill Frederick, who is Dave Lynam’s number one umbrella and beach chair supervisor, a veteran of seven years. Life is always good for young beach people. Jill, a former Cape swimmer and soccer player, is entering her senior year at Delaware and said when she graduates she would like to help me on the sportside. I told her I need her now! Jill is the daughter of Bob and Susan Frederick and not my niece; however there are at least a hundred young black adults who call me Uncle Fred so that makes me Uncle Fred.
Snippets - Soccer needs to stop making excuses for itself. The World Cup final 1-0 Spain victory over Holland - or is it the Netherlands - was aggressively boring and astoundingly devoid of highlights. Soccer is a European and South American social event, and someone tell me what South Africa is going to do with all those stadiums. I switched back and forth between the final and the Phillies’ 1-0 win over the Reds. The only time I screamed is when Brad Lidge was brought in for the final two outs. Count me among the fans who don’t trust Lidge and think Cole Hamels is a Ken doll model. Former Cape All-State guard Kyle White, a lean and quick jump-out-of-the-gym point guard with crazy game, will be in Las Vegas this week as an invited talent to showcase his skills to NBA teams alongside drafted rookies. There are all kinds of possibilities here, including being picked up by the European league. The Cape Crusaders basketball team is heading to Florida this week to compete in an AAU tournament. Tom Pederson, commissioner, founder, general manager, chief legal counsel and head coach, along with able assistants including Tommy Rushin, has put together a team of 13-14-year-olds that can flat-out play the game. I would like to put this question the next DSTP writing prompt. “Who got game and who got no game?”
