Food and Drink Across Delmarva series continues Nov. 2

October 26, 2024

The History Revival: Food and Drink Across Delmarva series presented by the Lewes Public Library and the Zwaanendael Museum will continue in November with a film screening about the contributions of Black watermen to the seafood industry, a discussion of the unique culinary traditions of Delmarva, and an exploration of the history of beverages and taverns in Lewes.

Emmy Award-winning director Alexis Aggrey will host a screening and discussion of her new documentary, “Water’s Edge: Black Watermen of the Chesapeake,” at 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 2. The film reveals how Maryland’s seafood industry offered opportunities for both free and enslaved Black Marylanders, who became central to the success of their communities. Attendees will learn how the Black watermen revolutionized the industry and still keep the traditions alive today.

Denise Clemons, a Cape Gazette food columnist and author of “A Culinary History of Southern Delaware,” will discuss the region’s culinary traditions at 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 8. From johnnycakes and wild game enjoyed by the Nanticoke and scrapple invented by German settlers, to regional favorites such as beach plum jelly and chicken with slippery dumplings, Clemons will explore the diverse history of food across Southern Delaware.

Capping off the series with “Tea on the Delaware” at 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 15, Marcos Salaverria from Lewes Historical Society will discuss the history of drinks and drinking in the local area. Topics include coffee and tea in Lewes, as well as historic meeting places and taverns, and the drinks they served.

All events will be held at the Lewes Public Library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes. The Nov. 8 and 15 presentations will also stream live online via Zoom.
