Football and more ‘football’

December 23, 2022

Argentina won its first World Cup since 1986 in one of the best World Cup finals finishes ever. For the first 75 minutes of the game, it seemed like Argentina was going to breeze through to a 2-0 victory. Then all hell broke loose. An Argentine defender committed an unnecessary foul in the penalty box that gave France a legitimate chance to come back in the game. France’s superstar Kylian Mbappe scored easily from the penalty spot. He then scored again a minute later to tie the game to send it into extra time. Argentina scored early in overtime, but the rules say the teams have to play the whole 30 minutes of overtime. Sure enough, Mbappe scored on another penalty kick with two minutes left in overtime to force the game to go to penalty kicks. Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi also scored two goals in the game.

Argentina prevailed by the score of 4-2 in the penalty kicks. If "football" does not get more popular because of this game, I don’t know what will make that happen. What a great World Cup! It did not disappoint.

For the other "football," the Philadelphia Eagles struggled to beat the Chicago Bears on Sunday by the score of 25-20. This game was a lot closer than was predicted because the Eagles struggled in the first half with the wind and weather and their offensive production. The defense played very well, sacking Chicago’s quarterback Justin Fields six times. You can tell the Eagles are a good team when they can win while not playing well at times during the game.

In the third quarter, Jalen Hurts injured his shoulder. He has just been ruled out for this week’s game against the Cowboys. I think this is a great decision because the team is in the playoffs, and Gardner Minshew is a good back-up quarterback. He’s capable of winning this game for the Eagles. We will see what happens.

Happy holidays to everyone. I hope you don’t have to go very far to get to your holiday destinations with this crazy weather system! Old man winter is definitely going to be here this weekend. I'm ready for spring!
