A physical education teacher for H.O. Brittingham Elementary was recently awarded the Going the Extra Mile Award at the Cape school board’s Nov. 14 meeting.
School board member Jessica Tyndall read Bill Funkhouser’s nomination for the monthly award, noting his contributions to the school community and remarkable ability to engage students in movement activities, fostering a love for physical fitness that keeps them excited and ready to learn.
“He consistently goes above and beyond to create an inclusive environment where every student feels valued and supported,” Tyndall said.
As the head of the school’s Special Olympics and bocce ball teams, Tyndall said, Funkhouser tirelessly advocates for students with diverse abilities, providing them with opportunities to shine and compete.
“His enthusiasm and commitment inspire not only the athletes, but also the entire school community,” she said.
In addition to these initiatives, Funkhouser plays a crucial role in organizing the Polar Bear Plunge [at H.O.B.] in collaboration with the Milton Fire Department. This event not only fosters school spirit, but also raises awareness and funds for the local community, demonstrating his dedication to service beyond the classroom, Tyndall said.
“Mr. Funkhouser ensures our students’ safety during transportation, overseeing a smooth bus boarding and departure process. His vigilance and attention to detail helps to create a secure environment for our students,” Tyndall said. “Mr. Funkhouser exemplifies what it means to be an outstanding educator. His unwavering commitment to inclusion, community engagement and student safety makes him an invaluable asset to H.O.B.”
