Gerald Dickens performs ‘A Christmas Carol’

Gerald Dickens, great-great-grandson of Charles Dickens, performed a spoken rendition of “A Christmas Carol” for a full house at the Cape Henlopen High School theater Dec. 13. The event was hosted by the Lewes Public Library’s Spoken Word Society.

Audience members packed into the theater to watch Dickens’ dynamic and spirited one-man performance, which has become an annual holiday tradition in Lewes in its fourth year. Dickens led the audience through a rollercoaster of emotions as he brought the story to life.

An actor, director and producer, Dickens performs regularly in the UK, at hotels, stately homes and on cruise ships, writing and directing “A Christmas Carol” and other one-man shows including “Mr. Dickens is Coming!” “Nicholas Nickleby” and “Sketches by Boz.” He plays more than 30 characters in his work.

Dickens’ Dec. 13 performance was one of many events hosted by the Spoken Word Society to celebrate the art of oral storytelling.
