On Sunday, Brian Harman completed one of the greatest weeks of his life on the golf course by winning the British Open by six shots over a number of excellent players. He had won two previous tournaments in his career, but he was definitely not one of the favorites to win the Open. He drove the ball extremely well. The weather conditions gave him an advantage in this event. Since it rained three out of the four days of competition, the fairways played extremely wide and soft. Brian‘s performance reminded me of Louis Oosthuizen who won by seven shots at the 2010 British Open at St. Andrews. Brian is a consistent performer on the PGA Tour in terms of finishing in the top 25, so I don’t think this will be a fluke victory.
The trade deadline in Major League Baseball is Aug. 1. The Phillies will probably try to add players to the roster, since they’re in the thick of the wild card race along with five or six teams. It is not obvious what kind of players they need to add, so they will probably wait until the last possible minute to trade for someone.
They just finished playing against the American League first-place Baltimore Orioles at home and were able to win two of three games in the series. They certainly had us holding our breath! In order for them to have any hope of advancing in the playoffs, they need to start scoring a lot more runs consistently. All the games against Orioles were very close and low scoring.
I would also like to congratulate Zach Gelof, a Cape High graduate, for making it to the major leagues. I hope he continues to have a successful debut season with the Oakland A’s.
The Philadelphia Eagles have started their training camp this week to try to defend their NFC championship from last year. I know one thing, the NFC East division will be more difficult to win than last year because the New York Giants are going to be a lot better than last year and maybe even the Washington Commanders who are under new ownership. It will be difficult for Jalen Hurts to have a better season than last year‘s. Let’s hope he stays healthy and continues to play very well. If the defense can be more consistent, it should be a fun year for all Eagles fans as well.
