The high school and middle school spring track and field seasons are in full swing, with most teams competing twice a week in duals, tris, quads, and full invitationals. The Cape High Vikings traveled south to Dagsboro March 28 to take on Indian River and Holly Grove Christian School out of Maryland. The Vikings beat the Indians 101-34 and Holly Grove 128-7 on the boys’ side, while the Lady Vikings were just as successful, topping the Indians 87-49 and Holly Grove 103-30.
Cape travels to Polytech for the annual Keith Burgess Invitational beginning at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 1. The meet was moved this year from Lake Forest High School across town to Polytech due to construction of the new track surface.
The Vikings will be back on the road Tuesday, April 4, for a tri meet at Milford with the Bucs and the Sussex Tech Ravens.
Middle school update
The Beacon girls are 5-0 on the season, currently riding a 67-meet winning streak. On March 28, the girls topped Millsboro 97-12 and Georgetown 108-1, while Millsboro beat Georgetown 43-40. Mehkia Applewhite, just a seventh-grader, has won the 100 and 200 and ran on the winning 4-by-100-meter relay team for the opening two meets, while Amaya Daisey has won the long jump and 400, and ran on the winning 4-by-200-meter relay as well. The 4-by-100-meter team of seventh-grader Tia Jarvis, eighth-grader Bre Kusen, eighth-grader Amaya Daisey and seventh-grader Applewhite set a new school record of 52.8 seconds. The previous record of 53.0 was set in 2015 by the foursome of Sydney Hollinger, Lakeyshia Saintervail, Rose Minni and Timesha Cannon. That performance is currently ranked 20th in the country, according to Milesplit.com.
In Wednesday action, the Mariner girls beat Seaford 77-27 to raise their record to 3-1.
The Beacon boys split, losing to Millsboro 59-50 but topping Georgetown 64-41. Millsboro beat Georgetown 59-49 in boys’ action. Cody Workman has been the workhorse for the boys, as he scored 15 points March 28 by winning the 400 meters in 57.8, 200 meters in 25.4, and long jump in 19-feet-1-quarter-inch for impressive March performances.
The Mariner boys beat the Seaford Blue Jays 63-45, raising their record to 4-0.
Mariner and Beacon will both compete at the Jim Blades Invitational Friday, April 7, among 14 teams under the lights at the Woodbridge Sports Complex in Bridgeville.
Beacon will travel to Selbyville earlier in the week Tuesday, April 4, for a dual meet.
Kim Miller 5K
Saturday, April 1, marks the fourth running of the Kim Miller 5K, beginning at the firehouse in Georgetown at 9 a.m. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the post-race gathering will be at 16 Mile Brewery.
Kim Miller was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in May 2010 at the age of 27. She fought the disease for 16 months, and in October 2011, she lost the battle and passed away peacefully. Organizers have set these events to celebrate what would have been Kim’s 34th birthday and to raise money for the fight against breast cancer in Delaware.

Oy Vey 5K Run
Sunday, April 2, will be the fifth annual Oy Vey 5K, beginning at 9 a.m., leaving from the Jewish Community Center on Holland Glade Road in Rehoboth Beach. Registration will open at 8 a.m. The course will take runners on the Junction and Breakwater Trail of Cape Henlopen State Park.
Proceeds from the Oy Vey 5K benefit the educational programs at Seaside Jewish Community. This past fall, the students were able to attend an educational day at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
The race will have plenty of infamous kugel to nosh and treats to tempt your palate. If there is something the Jewish Community knows how to do, it’s cook and feed the masses.
In addition, April 10 is Mitzvah Day (Good Deeds Day). We are asking those participating to bring packages of new socks or undergarments for children ages 2-12. Any new or unworn clothing will be accepted.

Inaugural Raven 5K Run
Looking for a midweek event? Ben Bamforth, a senior at Sussex Tech High School, will be producing this event for his senior project. This event is a 5K run and walk on the Sussex Tech cross country course. Ben’s goal is to donate the proceeds of the event to Delaware Special Olympics.
The race will be at Sussex Tech High School in Georgetown at 4 p.m., Thursday, April 6, with registration opening at 3:15 p.m.

Georgetown Run for Color 5K
The third annual Georgetown Run for Color 5K Fun Run/Walk will be held Saturday, April 8, beginning at 1 p.m. There will be limited parking at the Georgetown Middle School athletic field lot on School Lane. Additional parking is available within walking distance of Georgetown Middle School/Georgetown Elementary School. Parking is not available in the school’s front lots. The race will weave through the streets surrounding the school complex.

Seashore Classic Half Marathon
The Seashore Classic Half Marathon is right around the corner. The eighth annual event offers a half marathon, a 5K run and a relay division. It will be held Sunday, April 9, starting and finishing at Irish Eyes in Lewes. Runners will travel toward Lewes Beach and then to Cape Henlopen State Park, where they loop the park to an out-and-back on the Gordons Pond Trail before returning to Lewes and back to Irish Eyes. Preregistration packet pickup will be held the evening before, from 5 to 8 p.m., Saturday, April 8, at Irish Eyes. The race will take off at 8 a.m. and will kick off the Irish Eyes 6-Pack Series. If you can complete a distance of 10 miles, you're good to go for a half marathon. Nearly 200 participants have registered so far. Registration is still open through the middle of next week.
