Hoey Stevenson to run for 6th District Senate seat; kickoff event Dec. 10

Kim Hoey Stevenson, former Sussex County Planning & Zoning Commission vice chair, announced Dec. 6 her candidacy as a Republican for the 6th District Senate seat. A campaign kickoff event will begin at 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 10, at Fins Ale House, 243 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach.

“I am excited for this opportunity to serve the community that has given so much to me,” said Hoey Stevenson in a statement. “The Cape Region is a beautiful place to raise a family, start a business and to enjoy life after retirement. I look to not only preserve, but also enhance the quality of life in the district by promoting a strong education system, a government that levels the playing field rather than picks winners and losers, and protection for the district’s beautiful coastline and open space.”

Hoey Stevenson’s top issues include lower taxes, strong public safety and equality for all as part of the Putting the Cape Region First campaign slogan she unveiled in her announcement. 

A lifelong Sussex Countian, Hoey Stevenson has worked as a journalist, and an educator who taught sixth-grade science at Seaford Middle School and third grade at the Southern Delaware School of the Arts in Selbyville. Currently, she is the mentor coordinator for the Cape Henlopen School District.

As a writer, the press release states, the Delaware Division of Arts recognized Stevenson as an Emerging Artist for Literature in 2023. During Operation Restore Hope in Somalia, she wrote about the United Nations involvement in the area and Delawareans' contributions to these efforts.

Hoey Stevenson participates in the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women on a global basis. 

Locally, she is a volunteer in her church and is a member of the Rehoboth Beach Writers’ Guild. 

Hoey Stevenson resides in Lewes with her husband, Dave. They have seven children and 19 grandchildren.

Former Sen. Ernie Lopez, who represented the 6th District from 2012 to 2022, is endorsing Stevenson. The 6th District seat is now held by Sen. Russ Huxtable, D-Lewes.

“I have known Kim for many years, not just for her meaningful work in our local schools, but also as a friend who listens,” Lopez said in a statement. “Kim understands and values the importance of collaboration and bringing individuals together on a bipartisan basis to address challenges and work towards improvements to our quality of life. I know Kim will put all Cape Region residents first and restore the high level of constituent service and responsiveness that we all miss here locally.”
