Just a word to the wise for June bugs

March 8, 2010
I’m usually OK with cash, but not last Saturday at the Bob after Cape upset St. Mark’s. I did my cardio climb to the concession zone and kept thinking of the Terrell Owens line: “Get your popcorn ready!” I grabbed a Diet Coke and box of popcorn, went to the register work study student and he said, “five-fifty” and I responded “You know you are a big loser when you publicly have to return a popcorn box for lack of funds.”

I was joking; then Ken Dunning stepped in and bought my popcorn because his wife Dale, of soup kitchen fame, told him to have a heart for needy souls. Ken told me when he bought his two tickets before the game the man in the window asked “Cape side?” and Ken joked “What makes you think I’m from the Cape side?” and we all laughed because Ken looks like a painting of Sussex County black guy on a field tractor. But if you know the Dunning clan you know that Ken and his sons, Troy, Dale, Ken and Brooks rocked push mowers around Lewes since forever learning the value of a dollar.

Get your popcorn ready!

REAL REPERCUSSIONS - Let’s face it, discipline for young people is soft because of the indiscretions and impulsiveness of youth model and adults mostly willing to give second chances which many times turn into fourth and fifth chances. But when the athlete moves out of high school that all can abruptly change, so a word of caution: If you have been awarded a grant of money for sports and get busted and convicted in an alcohol-related offense before you arrive on campus you can wave goodbye to scholarship monies. Just a word to the wise for June bugs who feel entitled to a shore house rental for a week with enough alcohol to put the space shuttle into orbit.

SNIPPETS - Road race director Wayne Kursh, who had his second hip replacement surgery March 5, is already home and said he will be ready for the summer racing series. I wish I could say the same.

Actually, I love taking pictures of 400 people starting a race followed by a little socializing while waiting for them to come back and taking more pictures until the last runner crosses the line.

The University of Delaware lost a tennis match to the Naval Academy 4-3 last weekend and you’re right, none of us do care, but I saw that the match was played at the Tose Tennis Center and I wondered “Leonard Tose, former Eagles owner?” and that didn’t compute. It was actually named for Maurice and Terri Tose, who fall under the category of benefactors. The tennis center is part of the Brigade Sports Complex, which is located across the Severn River and adjacent to the Naval Academy golf course. The 150,000-square-foot facility was privately funded and built at a cost of $18.5 million. In addition to the tennis wing, it also includes ice hockey and rugby venues; an indoor hitting, chipping and putting facility for the golf team and club members; a fitness center; a restaurant; the pro shop for the golf course; athletic training rooms; numerous locker rooms for all of the Navy and visiting teams; office space for the various coaches; and meeting rooms for each of the programs.

Back at Cape we shoot down using money for a second turf field even though it would be crawling with community activities year round just like turf field one, which has been teeming with teams since the snow cleared. How about 800 people throw in a thousand bucks? I’m all in, how about you?

Cape will face Smyrna on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center in the semifinals of the DIAA girl’s state basketball tournament. Cape lost to the Eagles 49-46 on Feb. 2, as Johnesha Warren was limited to nine points. The Vikings have won 17 of 22 games and are once again underdogs. Let’s tip it off and see what happens.
