Late surge by Cape wrestling secures 43-33 win at Lake Forest

The Cape wrestling team survived five losses by pin at Lake Forest Feb. 7, pulling out a 43-33 win on the strength of a 15-0 run starting with an 8-4 decision by Jacob Goodsell at 175 pounds, followed by consecutive falls from Luke Arnold-Decyk at 190 and Patrick Donahue at 215.

“Lake is tough. They are having a great season,” said coach Chris Mattioni. “The state duals begin Wednesday. I just know this year we will be traveling.”

Cape’s additional wins came at 106, Nolan Wright over Gabriella Doyle (fall 0:49); 120, Austin Guerrieri over Kamre McCray (fall 1:45); 132, Tripp Gannon over Ryan Cutright (fall 1:18); 138, Max Meadows over Joshua Price (tech fall 18-0); and 157, Nick Walker over Ian Nance (tech fall 17-0).

Lake wins were at 113, Mason Farrell over Blake Walker (fall 1:06); 126, Demarion Ross over Cale Baker (decision 8-3); 144, Jerusalem Howard over Colin Poulis (fall 1:00); 150, Lincoln Lieller over Aidan Baum (fall 3:10); 165, Coen Dempsey over Carson Tuer (fall 1:22); and 285, Mathew Cannon over Wyatt Graviet (fall 1:10).

A few slam-bam bouts occurred around the state over the weekend, including Sussex Tech over Delcastle 60-16, Salesianum over Sussex Central 48-20, Caesar Rodney over Laurel 76-3, and Polytech over Newark Charter 72-3. Salesianum won over Smyrna 75-4 and Sussex Tech won over Sussex Academy 63-12. A close Division I matchup saw William Penn get a big win over St. Georges 37-31.

The state duals begin Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the site of the higher seed. In Division I, No. 1 Salesianum will host No. 8 Sussex Tech, No. 2 Caesar Rodney will host No. 7 St. Georges, No. 3 Sussex Central will host No. 6 Cape Henlopen and No. 4 Smyrna will host No. 5 William Penn. In Division II, No. 1 Delaware Military Academy will host No. 8 McKean, No. 2 Saint Mark’s will host No. 7 Woodbridge, No. 3 Laurel will host No. 6 First State Military Academy and No. 4 Lake Forest will host No. 5 Indian River. 

The semifinals and finals for both divisions will be held Saturday, Feb. 15, at Smyrna High School.
