After winning first place for grades 2-3 in the 2023 Conservation Poster Contest hosted by Sussex Conservation District, Lewes Elementary third-grader Victor Zhou captured first place in the state competition as well and is now vying for national honors.

This year’s theme was One Water, said SCD Communications and Outreach Specialist Siobhan Kelley in presenting Victor with his award and a $50 gift card Nov, 17.

Victor said he was inspired to draw his poster about the water cycle by researching online, including reviewing what other students have created in previous years.

The contest is sponsored by the National Association of Conservation Districts, which selects a new theme every year, Kelley said. Every county has a winner that advances to the state level, and the state winner goes on to the national competition, she said.
