Milford-based John Mollura is a professional photographer who specializes in creative portraits.
Sacrifice & Light, his latest project, is documenting the stories that healthcare workers across the planet have witnessed during the COVID-19 outbreak.
Through video chat, using a Zoom video meeting, he creates portraits of healthcare workers projected onto hospital scrubs. He combines those images with the stories of positivity they have witnessed during the outbreak and the sacrifices they are making during this challenging time.
He found inspiration through the stories he heard from his own friends in healthcare. One of his closest friends, who works in a hospital, would not sleep in the same room as her husband for fear of exposing him to the coronavirus. Another friend confided that she had not hugged her son or husband in weeks.
Mollura said these stories haunted him. He wanted to provide an outlet for healthcare workers to share their experiences and pair them with photographs that make an impact, and so his Sacrifice & Light project was born.
Because taking photographs in person is not possible, he devised a way to create portraits remotely with Zoom and a projector. The photoshoot itself takes mere minutes to complete. The subject can choose to remain and be photographed with a mask on, keeping identity confidential.
Participants from all over the world are encouraged to participate. Times are provided throughout the day to accommodate people in other time zones. When participants schedule their photoshoot via the link below, they will be asked to provide their stories of Sacrifice & Light. The portrait and story will be posted to social media and the subject will receive a high-resolution digital file of the final image.
There is no charge for participation in this project.
