Milton Elementary students promote acts of kindness
The fifth-grade leadership team at Milton Elementary School is working to promote acts of kindness in the classroom and community.
To celebrate Kindness Week, the team visited several local businesses with an oversized paper donut and asked employees to dust confetti sprinkles on the donut when they observed or participated in an act of kindness.
Following that field trip, the team hosted a school assembly to share the initiative with classmates. Students read the book “The Jelly Donut Difference” by Maria Dismondy and announced a school-wide kindness spirit week and contest.
Each class received a printout of a donut. For every act of kindness recognized, students put a sprinkle on their classroom donut. The class with the most sprinkles at the end of the contest receives a donut party.
Outside the cafeteria, students and staff also posted acts of kindness on another oversized donut.
On Feb. 21, the team collected donuts that were handed out at the kickoff to count sprinkles and determine each grade-level winner.
While counting, fifth-grader Maddie Hill said reading the book helped kids realize it’s better to be kind. Classmate McKenzie Russell said acts of kindness had to be more than just giving someone a compliment.
McKenzie said the school has an outside “buddy bench” where a kid can sit as a signal they need someone to talk to. An act of kindness could involve sitting with that classmate, helping someone tie their shoes or assisting a friend with a project, she said.
