Georgetown ceremony to honor Vietnam veterans March 29

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1105 of Sussex County will conduct a ceremony at 3 p.m., Saturday, March 29, at The Village of College Park in Georgetown to celebrate National Vietnam War Veterans Day. The public is welcome.

This national holiday honors Vietnam War veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice. There will be a color guard, gun salute, guest speakers and reading of the names of Sussex County’s fallen heroes engraved on the Vietnam War monument.

Chapter 1105 will also describe its outreach activities to help veterans be aware of their benefits. Refreshments will be served.

Protecting civil liberties town hall set March 29

ACLU of Delaware and Progressive Democrats of Sussex County will host Protecting the Rights of Delawareans and Saving Democracy, a town hall, from 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday, March 29, at the Lewes Public Library, 111 Adams Ave, Lewes.

Speakers will be Attorney General Kathy Jennings and ACLU-DE Executive Director Mike Brickner. They will discuss how Delaware state officials and the ACLU of Delaware are fighting back against the Trump administration’s early attacks on civil liberties, including those targeting immigrants’ rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and the core principles of democracy. Women’s expo set March 29 in Lewes

The public is invited to visit the Delaware Women’s Expo from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, March 29, at Nassau Valley Vineyards, 32165 Winery Way, Lewes. 

Attendees can enjoy shopping, seminars, prize drawings and food as they interact with area businesses and nonprofit organizations focused on women’s issues ranging from health to fashion, lifestyle to livelihoods and more.

Beebe Healthcare will be on-site providing free health screenings including blood pressure, blood glucose, total cholesterol, bone density and body mass index.

Free film screening to focus on women’s history March 30 

Celebrating Women’s History Month, the Schwartz Center will host a free film screening and discussion of “The Six Triple Eight” from 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday, March 30, in Dover.

Sponsored by the John H. Porter-First State Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen Inc., the film screening will feature the award-winning drama from Netflix inspired by the only Women’s Army Corps unit of color to serve overseas in World War II. The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, fighting on two fronts against racism and sexism, also endured grueling working conditions to accomplish their extraordinary mission, and served their country with honor and distinction.

At the conclusion of the film, a panel of John H. Porter-First State Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen Inc. members, including women veterans, will talk about their military experiences, and answer questions about the chapter and Tuskegee Airmen history. Students from Delaware State University’s Aviation Program will be on hand to answer questions about their courses of study and their perspectives on following in the footsteps and legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen.

UUSD to meet March 30

The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware will hold a service at 10 a.m., Sunday, March 30, with “The Blessings of Trust” as the topic. The Rev. Heather Rion Starr said, “We cannot function as if everything could fall apart tomorrow (though sometimes it sure feels like it could). Therefore, we choose to take some action, and then another, and then another. At every point along the way, we are putting our trust in…what? Who? Overfall Preserve hearing set March 31

Lewes Mayor and Council will hold a public hearting on the proposed Overfall Preserve development at 5:30 p.m., Monday, March 31 at the Rollins Center.  Overfall Preserve, formerly known as the Warrington property, would be a 90 townhome community at 1147 Savannah Rd.

SAR Caesar Rodney scholarship applications due March 31

For its 2025 scholarship, the Caesar Rodney Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution is accepting applications through Monday, March 31. This scholarship seeks to recognize outstanding student volunteer service and honor young people who have made a difference by inspiring others toward volunteer service. Eligible applicants must be high school seniors who reside in Sussex or Kent counties. Successful applicants must be active volunteers in school and the community, and have a minimum GPA of 2.5. To apply, go to dessar.org and select CR 2025 Scholarship. The Sons of the American Revolution honors Revolutionary War patriot ancestors by promoting patriotism, serving communities, and educating and inspiring future generations about the founding principles of the country.

Delaware aquaculture free presentation set April 2

Aquaculture experts will discuss how the industry is shaping Delaware’s coastal environment and economy, in a program set for 3 p.m., Wednesday, April 2, at St. Martha’s Episcopal Church, 117 Maplewood St., Bethany Beach. The event is free and open to the public. Expert speakers include: Dr. Dennis McIntosh, Delaware State University, fisheries and aquaculture professor; Dr. Ed Hale, University of Delaware,, fisheries and aquaculture professor; Alyssa Campbell University of Delaware, shellfish hatchery manager; Rick Chamberlin, president, Delaware Environmental Coalition; and Morgan Krell, science technician, Delaware Center for the Inland Bays. Each will provide insights into Delaware’s evolving aquaculture landscape, the role of sustainable fisheries, shellfish hatchery advancements, and the mission of DECO in fostering environmental stewardship through action and policy.

The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce will welcome Brian DiSabatino, CEO of EDIS Company and chair of the Delaware Business Roundtable, as the speaker for its economic development lunch from 12 to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 2, at Georgetown Public Library, 123 W. Pine St., Georgetown.

The Delaware Business Roundtable is a public/private partnership with the mission to advance policies that promote economic growth and opportunity for all Delawareans. NARFE meeting reservations due April 3

NARFE Coastal Sussex Chapter 1690 will meet Thursday, April 10, at 1776 Steakhouse in Midway Plaza, Rehoboth Beach. Program speaker will be Red Moulinier, restoration chair of the Delaware River and Bay Lighthouse Foundation. He will discuss the restoration work and 100th anniversary of the Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse.

Delaware Aviation Hall of Fame nominations due April 4

The Delaware Aviation Hall of Fame is looking for a few good men and women to honor at its 25th induction ceremony to be held in the fall.

Founded in 1999 to commemorate the First State’s aviation achievers, the hall of fame is accepting nominations for consideration from the general public through Friday April 4. To date, 145 individuals have been enshrined, including 33 posthumously.

Criteria are: Outstanding contribution to the advancement of aviation in Delaware; achievement in aviation bringing singular credit to the First State or gallantry in aviation by a Delawarean in service to the First State and/or nation.

Eligibility for induction may encompass any aspect of aviation: in the air, on the ground (including air crew and service personnel), design, manufacture, maintenance, flight instruction, air traffic control, airport operations, aviation sales, promotion and education, civilian or military.

League of Women Voters legislative day set April 8

The League of Women Voters of Delaware is holding its annual legislative day from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 8, in the Christ Church parish hall at State and Water streets, Dover.

Speaking on the topic, “Successful Delaware: Healthy, Housed, Educated,” a panel of state legislators will address the intersectionality of an insufficient healthcare workforce, a shortage of affordable housing and inadequate early care and education.

Following the morning program will be lunch with legislators at 12:30 p.m. Participants may visit Legislative Hall in the afternoon or stay for discussion of issues.

Special confession event set April 9 at St. Jude

St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church will offer the sacrament of reconciliation at 5 p.m., Wednesday, April 9, in both the church and the parish life center. Coastal Sussex NARFE welcoming new members

Coastal Sussex NARFE Chapter 1690 held a March 13 meeting, chaired by Acting President Larry Trombello, who swore in Ken Sosne as acting vice president to complete the 2025 program-year term. Due to the recent death of the chapter president, Strombello stepped back into the role, leaving that vacancy for vice president. Maria Ryan was appointed as sunshine chair. At elections held earlier in the year, new individuals were added board, bringing new energy and ideas. All federal employees, active and retired, are welcome to join the chapter, attend luncheon meetings and join community service initiatives. The role of NARFE in protecting federal employees is more important now than ever. Chapter 1690 is one of five chapters in Delaware helping NARFE take a strong role in supporting active and retired federal employees. Chapter 1690 hold its luncheon membership meetings at 1776 Steakhouse in Rehoboth Beach the second Thursday of each month with the exception of July and August. Members get updates on NARFE activities, enjoy a good lunch and hear interesting guest speakers.
