Park on any paved surface and you will be just fine

June 22, 2010
The second turf field at Cape is getting set up for carpet bombing, but lights and permanent first-class bleachers still seem to flicker in the future. The fields in between have been seeded for Bermuda grass, so don’t remove any snow fencing or crime scene tape to park your super-duty dually diesel crew cab overcompensation truck. Park on a paved surface and you will be fine. I was lucky to grab a photo of Delaware Gov. Jack Markell with Michael McNesby and his lesser-known brother Jerry before last Saturday’s All-Star game. Jerry as a player and Michael as an All-Star child were in the 1970 game. I don’t know where Jack Markell was 40 years ago.

Kid Camden - Sounds like a boxer from the mean streets, but Camden Weaver, just 4 years old, gets into a bagel with cream cheese in front of Dave & Skippy’s Gourmet Bagel and Sandwich shop on Wilmington Avenue during the finishing stages of last Sunday’s Father’s Day 5K. The first Father’s Day race was 20 years ago back before bagels were cool. I am expecting another grandchild in the fall so I’m putting in name bids for Camden, Absecon and if fraternal twins, Molly and Cholly.

Anorexic old guys - Say it ain’t so and you would be wrong; there are old guys who suck down weight looking for longevity, rocking that craggy get-off-my-lawn look. I’m sporting the Butterball turkey minus the thermometer that pops out when I get hot look. Fat has moisture and insulation and you have a chance of getting a hug from grandchildren, but no kid wants to get boned by a grandfather with 16 elbows and multiple vertebral protrusions.

Kids and colors - I like diversity of colors, cultures and lifestyles for purely selfish reasons; it reminds me of my urban row house childhood and my mother who always said, “Make a (insert any uniquely defining exceptionality) your friend and you’ll have a friend for life.” That’s the best thing about sports; otherwise people mostly are magnetized toward others who look and think like them with similar levels of economics and education. I call it the coalescing of class, the homogenization of homos, and it’s so boring, and nobody wants that except for the clinically paranoid. The hand in hand buddy program before last Saturday night’s All-Star game was absolutely beautiful as always.

Track suit to smart suit - Announcers during the Brazil versus Ivory Coast soccer game mentioned that coaches have gone from track suits to smart suits and asked, “Just what advantage do you get from that?” I’ve always thought the same thing when looking at basketball coaches who do the three-piece suit dress-up routine; I just don’t get it at all.

My cause is just because - I woke one morning two weeks ago before the annoying whippoorwill call and decided I wanted to run point on fundraising to help the DeStasio family stay out of their own pocket with expenses not covered by insurance in dealing with Iron Mike’s ALS. I joke, “I am losing cool points,” because who likes the “write me a check guy” but anyway I started the Iron Mike DeStasio 50/500 ALS Fund because either way you multiply 50 by 500, the number equals 25,000. Two weeks and $3,000 later it has been a good liftoff, so if you would like to help, drop into any County Bank, tell them you’re donating to the Iron Mike DeStasio ALS Fund and they will take it from there, or send a check to me at 14 Cristeen Court, Lewes, DE 19958 and I’ll make your grandmother an Athlete of the Week.

Snippets - Don’t sit by the water if you don’t want to get splashed! If you have been watching all the World Cup games, it not only means you are a rabid fan but you also don’t have a job.

I watched lots of U.S. Open golf coverage and concluded it would take me 500 strokes and 100 lost balls to get around the course.

Team Delaware competed in the National Cadet Duals in Rochester, Minn., last week with Delaware placing second in the consolation 3 bracket. Local grapplers and their records in the tough competition included Thomas Ott, 215, 5-2; Aaron Dennis, 140, 3-4; Justin Lopez, 135, 2-5; and Tony Scarfo 3-4. The team of Ali Coning, Shanel Dickens, Rachel Sadowski and Rebecca Pepper ran a time of 9:44.9 to place eighth in the emerging elite class at last Friday’s New Balance Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. The winning time in the championship section was 8:46. Cape will move closer this week to putting together a football staff; hopefully the selection of coordinators will not be the subject of community debate. The Vikings are close to getting this right and the kids deserve it.
