Playoff hopes are fading

December 3, 2021

On Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles lost a boring game to the New York Giants 13-7. So much for the momentum the Eagles supposedly had after the last two weeks. Their offensive effort was pitiful! Once again, they did not run the ball enough. Jalen Hurts had a really disappointing game at quarterback. After the game, they said he had a sprained ankle, but there is no obvious play where he hurt himself. So we will have to see how he is this week in the Eagles’ game against the New York Jets. The Jets have struggled for the whole season, so we can only hope that the Eagles step back up and win big this weekend.

This might be the last time I get to talk about baseball for a while. As of Dec. 1, the owners have locked out the players, which means that no players can sign any more contracts, because there is no CBA. As usual, they are fighting over money and the amount of years a player has to play in the majors to get to free agency. Under the last contract, you had to play six years. The players want that reduced to five or four years. On the other side, the owners want to have a 14-team playoff structure so that they can get more money from the TV contracts. The owners also believe that there would be less tanking (intentionally losing and hoping for higher draft picks) because more teams theoretically will have a chance to make the playoffs deeper into the season. I don’t think the situation will change much until January 2022 because it is the off-season right now and there is no urgency at this time.

It is championship week in college football. Right now, the four teams that would make it to the National Championship playoff would be Georgia, Michigan, Alabama and Cincinnati. I think that if Georgia beats Alabama in the SEC Championship game, Alabama will be eliminated from the playoffs in favor of Oklahoma State or Notre Dame getting in. In the Big 10 Championship, Iowa will play Michigan. If Michigan wins, that guarantees their first time in the national playoff. Go Iowa! If Cincinnati wins their conference championship against Houston, it will be the first time under the current championship playoff format that a non-power five conference team gets into the national playoff. Good for them. I am in favor of expansion of the playoff to eight teams, but not 12. This is currently what the National Conference Commissioners are talking about for the future. It all sounds confusing, but you get it.

Have a good weekend. Come on, Eagles, get your act together and surprise us!
