Race for Open Space set April 20 in Lewes

Organizers seek sponsors, runners to support cause
February 11, 2024

Participants and sponsors are already lining up for a local race to be held on Earth Day weekend to help save the last remaining undeveloped land in Lewes.

Proceeds from the Saturday, April 20 Race for Open Space 5K and 1-mile walk will go toward purchase of the 29-acre Fourth Street Preserve, a historic property that has remained untouched for the past 350-plus years.

The race will begin at nearby George H.P. Smith Park, taking runners and walkers past the property, and conclude with an awards ceremony and celebration at Smith Park. It is being coordinated by Seashore Striders, Greater Lewes Foundation, local businesses and the City of Lewes. The ceremony will also kick off a season-long fundraising effort by Lewes businesses to support the Fourth Street Preserve campaign.

Runners and walkers of all ages are encouraged to take part and show their commitment to maintaining open space in Lewes, said Jim Ford, campaign chair. People who wish to participate in the race or walk can enroll at seashorestriders.com.

The campaign is actively seeking sponsorships to underwrite the race and generate support. Three levels of $500, $1,000 and $2,500 are available, with a wide range of sponsor benefits. Major sponsor opportunities for higher amounts are also available, with corresponding benefits.
