The Belhaven Hotel was once one of Rehoboth Beach’s premier hotels. Located at Rehoboth Avenue and the Boardwalk, the hotel’s location was second to none.
Developers are in the process of trying to gain approval to build a modern version of the historic hotel, which was a popular destination for decades during the summer months.
According to an Aug. 1, 1928, article in The Evening Journal, “Rehoboth Beach is enjoying the best season in its history. The two larger hotels, the Belhaven and the Henlopen, are always filled to capacity. Each Saturday evening, entertainment at each hotel is offered in the nature of dancing.” It goes on to say George Kelly and his musicians provide jazz music at the Belhaven.
This postcard from the Delaware Public Archives’ Postcard Collection shows the Belhaven in the 1920s. The hotel was built in the early 20th century. It was purchased by Nick Papajohn and his brothers-in-law in 1938, when they learned the hotel was struggling financially.
Like many beachfront properties, the hotel was heavily damaged during the Storm of 1962. According to a marble slab affixed to the building at The Ice Cream Store, the structure was rebuilt in 1964.
