Rehoboth canal dock should stay

February 18, 2025

Zero creativity from Rehoboth’s commissioners on the issue of the canal dock. The dock was built, but then completely mismanaged.

There is a 30-minute limit for docking your boat – 30 minutes! The dock has turned into a glorified rest area (park bathroom) for boaters. So of course "the canal dock has had little use since it first opened in 2021." It's the boat equivalent to every car parking spot in Rehoboth being 30-minute parking, but with no meter.

On the other hand, for us kayakers and paddleboarders, it has been a much-needed facility. That dock is the only location you can launch with legal parking south of Lewes. Tearing it out will leave us nothing.

Take a page out of the Lewes dock book:

  • Create a reservation system
  • Charge by the hour (with a max)
  • Charge more for peak hours
  • Take that money and put it back to finance the dock restoration (and future restoration).

Many boaters up and down the canal would be happy to take advantage of this reservation system. It provides a way for boaters to come south from Lewes or north from Dewey/Long Neck to go out to dinner in Rehoboth.

Our commissioners should be here to run a business, not "cut our losses."
