October 21, 2024

Just nine points separated the Sussex Academy and Caesar Rodney volleyball squads, but the Riders pulled out a 3-1 win Oct. 17 in Wyoming. The Seahawks move to 4-9, while the Riders are 6-7.

The Riders won the first two sets 26-24 and 25-23, before dropping the third 25-22 to the Seahawks. CR bounced back for a 28-26 win to secure the victory on the Riders’ Teacher Appreciation Night.

Sophomore Maya Hastings led the Seahawks with eight kills, four aces and six digs. Grayce Glover pounded nine kills and 13 digs, while Ellie Merrick knocked down six kills and bumped nine digs. Setter Jolie Smith put up 28 assists and bumped four digs. Senior libero Savannah Montgomery bumped 16 digs. Addison Gaull was credited with three blocks while eighth-grader Reagan Klahr had four kills and four digs.

Senior Reagan White led CR at the net, garnering 20 kills and 16 digs. Katherine Orfe and Jannike Campero added eight kills each for the home team. Campero and Kenddall Blackwell recorded 24 and 17 assists, receptively. Senior Ava Brown pounded four aces.

“We have two games left,” said Montgomery. “I think we’ve learned a lot from this match. We fought hard for each point, and I think we’ll carry over that energy for the remainder of the season.”

“This match was the most fun match to coach for the season,” said Sussex Academy head coach Hailee Gooch. “I think the girls started to gel half way through the season. They know what it’s like to work hard, and I’m excited for the remainder of this year and next.”

The Seahawks travel to Woodbridge Tuesday, Oct. 22, to face the Raiders.
