A second turf field to replace those giant dirt piles

January 8, 2010
Baby Kaelyn Rodgers was born on New Year’s Day. Dave Kergaard is her maternal grandfather without the maternal instincts.  Dave Kergaard is a personal trainer at Gold’s Gym in Rehoboth. His nephew Dave Zastudil was the punter for Baltimore until he realized he would get more kicks and money launching the Cleveland Browns out of bad field position.

Kelly Kergaard Rodgers is Dave’s daughter and is married to Chad Rodgers. Kaelyn Avery Rodgers is their first child after 10 years of marriage. Kelly and Chad are part owners of the Greene Turtle West in Ocean City, Md. Bring this article and charge a cheeseburger to the tab of Poppa Kergaard. Tell the waitress Fredman sent you.

“Kelly and Chad are rabid Raven fans as you can tell by the photo,” Dave Kergaard said.

THREE BOOKS, TWO DAYS - I wrote a 22-chapter book of short stories in 1992 in 22 days. I just wanted to see how the stories ended once I started them. Last week I read three books in two days, not like I’m a voracious reader - maybe eater - I just wanted to get them out of my life.

Jeff Pearman, a Delaware graduate, wrote “The Rocket That Fell To Earth” and it is a must-read if you ever intend to throw high heat and tell lies to Congress while you and your wife take naked butt injections of human growth hormones from a sleazeball personal trainer you are suing.

Tommy Kane gave me the book “Season of Life” by Jeffery Marx, and it’s about two men, Biff Poggi and Joe Ehrmann, who coached at Gilman High School in Maryland. It is all about teaching boys to be men and is a bit over the top, except I actually know these guys. My nephew Mike is close to them both and they are good men who coach football and tell their players, “Our job is to love you - your job is to love each other.” Anyone who coaches should read this book.

George Glenn gave me the book written by his good friend Bruce Reynolds, “The Art of the Upset.” Reynolds coached at William Penn in New Castle for 28 years and let’s just say he is the guy you want coaching your kid. Reynolds can be reached at coachbrucereynolds.com, or do your usual internet search when book shopping.

TURF FIELD TWO - If you ever see me carrying around a swatch of field turf call in the paint ball attack helicopter. Don’t ever let me be “that guy.” But all sarcasm and gloating aside, by New Year’s resolution 2010 I can report that Cape’s second turf field, which will go down where there are now giant dirt piles, is going to happen and delivery/completion is expected sometime this spring.

The $800,000 - give or take - expenditure was approved as an add alternate in the first referendum. The transfer of funds referendum which failed was only asked for as a way to ensure funding early, but now as the big project is nearing completion and the funds are there it is Turf Bowl Two! According to Cape Superintendent George Stone, “We are selecting special turf specifically for hockey with thicker and shorter blades but it can also be used by soccer and lacrosse. We considered Astroturf like UD but that couldn’t be used for other sports. We initially won’t have lights but it is being stubbed with electric to easily add it. It will hopefully be completed this spring.”

It will be stubbed for electric, Dogs! Do you remember back when there were no lights and Cape played football on Saturday mornings and soccer in the afternoons?

READ AND REACT - I have been a poor prognosticator of professional football outcomes this season which is why Tim Clausen is owed $25 of my doughnut money. Here are my picks for this weekend: I like the Ravens over New England. I see the Packers getting Arizona. I feel the Jets over the Bengals in the ”who is more traumatized” game - Cincinnati over the loss of Chris Henry or the Jets on the death of the owner’s 30-year-old daughter. I want to watch football - I don’t want to be sad.

A rogue Philly spirit possessed my body and whispered “Don’t leave us now. Take the four points; there is no way we lose to the Cowboys twice in one week.” Garrett Reid, son of coach Andy Reid, was sent back to prison last May for punching a halfway house mate in the face. Being head coach of the Eagles is a diversion program for Andy Reid. I want him to be happy - so Eagles win!
