As everyone knows by now, Tiger Woods was the last man standing and has come full circle from all the critics’ hype and won his fifth Masters this past Sunday.
He won by only one shot over Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka. I was not confident that Tiger was going to win this event until the 15th hole, when Francesco Molinari hit the ball in the water for the second time in three holes. Tiger continued to play very consistent golf and when he birdied that 15th hole, that was when I was finally confident that he was going to get to the green jacket.
Many are calling this comeback possibly the best one in sports history. I actually believe it is the second best in golf history. Ben Hogan came back to win the 1950 US Open after he and his wife were in a terrible accident and were hit by a bus. Very few thought he would even be able to play golf at that level again.
This comeback for Tiger is quite impressive and it will be interesting to see what he can do from this point forward. I still think he is a good contender for being able to win at this years US Open, but I am not as optimistic that he will be able to beat Jack Nichlaus’ record of winning 18 majors in his career.
In baseball, the Philadelphia Phillies will be hosting the major league All-Star game in 2026, to help commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States. This is quite a fitting tribute, even though it is a long way off.
On a personal sports note, I want to congratulate my cousin Julie and all her teammates on the Syracuse women’s lacrosse team. They are headed to the ACC tournament next week. It's been a really tough but great season, and they have only lost three games. I hope they can keep up this level of play and win the tournament!
Two of her sisters played for Syracuse as well and it's been nine years of watching and following great women's lacrosse. Now that she will be graduating, I am hoping that a Cape player goes to Cuse so I have a reason to continue to follow them for a few more years.
Staying with lacrosse, the Cape boys had a great win over Salesianum last week. They won 12 to 8. These two teams are usually the best teams in the State of Delaware and they will most likely meet again in the state tournament next month.
See you on the sidelines!
