Solution to deception and misdirection: Tackle everybody!
Artist and athlete - “She’s got everything she needs, she’s an artist, she don’t look back. She can take the dark out of the nighttime and paint the daytime black.” - Bob Dylan.
Kim Klabe, 46, won her age group at the Lewes 5K July 23 in a time of 23:38. The heat index before the race was “forget about it” but Kim, who used to work as a fitness instructor at the Y before taking a job at the Rehoboth Art League, is always cool under the pressure cooker.
Saturday, Aug. 6, Kim will open her first one-person exhibit at Peninsula Gallery on Savannah Road, coincidentally if not ironically across the canal bridge in Lewes. In times of economic uncertainty, art is considered a smart investment. The exhibit of oil paintings, just like my roof shingles, is called The A-Z of Lewes and Rehoboth. The exhibit continues through Aug. 31. It can be previewed at www.peninsula-gallery.com.
Boot Scoot Boogie - The Delaware Wing-T was just the greatest offense that produced the best quarterbacks, but it’s mostly gone now, because in modern times with so many impulsive players with access to performance enhancements, there is no deception or misdirection. Everyone just blows up what’s in front of them and offensive football exploits that with a quick-strike, no-huddle approach. But the bootlegging, get-out-on-the-flank option quarterback was nearly impossible to stop and was fun to watch from the stands.
I'm thinking of Rich Gannon, Jeff Komlo, Scott Bruner, Bill Vergantino and our own Scott Reihm - and let's not forget Tom Dimuzio and Rick Skully. Coach Tubby Raymond started to run less bootleg and option action near the end of his coaching career with Leo Hamlett 1995-96 and Matt Nagy 1998-2000.
Who was the most dangerous triple-threat quarterback ever to stop under center for Cape? My vote goes to Willie Savage, who was recruited to North Carolina as a decathlete.
Vaulted ceiling - I have always been a reverse snob, choosing most of the time to look down upon people who have too much money. Money given to NFL players is so stupid.
Santonio Holmes, traded by the Steelers because of his predilection for soft drugs, signed a five-year, $50 million contract with 28 guaranteed. Michael Vick, handed the keys to the car by the Eagles, will make $16 million guaranteed for this coming season, but the Birds are trying to sign him to a long-term deal. Are you nauseous yet? DeSean Jackson is a training-camp holdout because he is only scheduled to make $565,000 this season. Kobe Bryant was quoted as saying he would consider playing in Turkey next season, but only for $1 million dollars a month.
Now let's get back to arguing about the debt ceiling.
Self-centered - A fitness center is a place and time for self-improvement, otherwise what’s the point? But it’s not really the empathy center of the universe. I found you can say any outrageous thing about your own state of health, stop in the middle and whoever you’re talking to will have no memory of what you just said; they will just be relieved you’re not talking anymore. Ever run into a doctor in a social setting? The last question Doc is asking is, “How are you feeling?” and I don’t blame him. I just had a close friend diagnosed with an inoperable tumor on his spine just after his doctor sent him to a chiropractor.
Only after an emergency MRI was it revealed that old “Crack Back Baby” would have broken my friend’s neck if he himself had spent more time in the gym. Seriously, when’s the last time you saw a chiropractor benching 315 pounds? Did I mention my feet hurt?
Snippets - Get ready, ocean lovers, because after the dead flat, midsummer-nothing-happening period, that baby is getting ready to crack. I’m a Phillies fan and I honestly think they are soft and Charlie Manuel is not that smart and Cliff Lee is on the verge of being just an ordinary pitcher. They should trade for relief pitcher Heath Bell and a free-swinging, right-handed bat. Dominic Brown is “a work in progress”? Poppy Frank Frederick ran away from home when he was 65. Grandmom Rose called him a piece of work in progress - or was that regress? I’m out like a waterspout. I have to go ride the recumbent bike, which is so ergonomically friendly. Go on now, git!
