Super Bowl Sunday is a placation vacation and power party

February 13, 2024

Boomer or bigot - I avoided all pregame run-ups to the Super Bowl then watched the longest game ever, which is just an excuse for the biggest power party on the planet financed by the everyday people who get played every day. I checked on social media to see what attitudes were trending. I knew there would be split reactions to the halftime show. It was pretty funny that some said if you didn’t like it you were either a bigot or a boomer. As a boomer, the entire hype fest had me at Post Malone, the same initials as Patrick Mahomes. Super Bowl Sunday is a placation vacation and an attempt to accommodate all cultural groups. The game was lame until it wasn’t. In the extra period, the 49ers should have thrown caution to the desert winds and not have kicked a field goal, setting up the script for Mahomes to rip your beating heart from your chest and send it back to San Francisco with Tony Bennett. But boomers are singing, “If you're going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.” - Scott McKenzie, 1967.

Student ambassadors - Students who show up on teams and in activities from band to theater to ROTC put a face on a building and give it a sense of place. I was at a wrestling match Feb. 7, Cape at Sussex Tech, and was very impressed not only by the improvement of the Ravens team, but also the level of buy-in from the fans, including knowledgeable adults and exuberant students. Construction of a new high school will be in motion next school year, and that is a good thing. I read articles about school funding and they put me to sleep. I don't even look at my own checking account – excuse me, online banking history. I just know on the sports side of the street, the more contenders, the better it is for everyone.

Lax World - North Carolina beat Mercer 13-5. Mikey Frederick (Cape) had one goal and one assist for Mercer. Delaware beat Lafayette 14-6. Hank D’Ambrogi (Cape) had two assists for Delaware. Denver beat Air Force 11-9. Caelan Driggs (Sallies) had three goals and one assist for Air Force. Limestone beat Florida Tech 18-12. Joe Coveleski (Cape) had three goals for Florida Tech. In women’s lacrosse, Virginia Tech beat VCU 10-5. Ella Rishko (Cape) had an assist for Virginia Tech. Rollins beat Alabama Huntsville 19-11. Molly Mendes (Cape) had a goal and an assist for Rollins. Salisbury beat Stevenson 20-7. Goalie Reagan Torbert (Dover) had 13 saves in 48 minutes for Stevenson. Boston College, ranked No. 2 in the nation, beat UMass 20-9. Lydia Colasante (Tatnall) starts on defense for BC. BC home games are played in Fish Field House, which is closed to the public. The rivalry win over UMass had the attendance number at 60. Once the weather warms up, games move outside to Alumni Stadium.

Dual wrestling championships - Competition begins at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 14. Division I has No. 1 Sussex Central (12-0) hosting No. 8 Sussex Tech (8-3). No. 4 Caesar Rodney (9-3) hosts No. 5 William Penn (11-4). The two winners will wrestle each other Saturday, Feb. 17, at Smyrna. No. 3 Cape Henlopen (15-4) hosts No. 6 Smyrna (9-7). No. 2 Salesianum (15-4) hosts No. 7 Milford (9-4). The winners of those matches will also face each other Feb. 17 in Smyrna. Cape beat Smyrna 46-24 Feb. 5 by winning nine of 14 matches, including six falls.

Snippets - Trey Leggins (Cape) ran 49.83.0 for the Queen’s University 4-by-400 indoor team that clocked a time of 3:24.54, the 10th-best time in school history. Mason Fluharty, a left-handed pitcher out of Cape and Liberty University, is a non-roster invitee to spring training with the Toronto Blue Jays. Mason is not on the 40-man roster, but he has a chance to compete for a roster spot. Nineteen non-roster players received invitations, including 10 pitchers, of whom four are lefties. Zack Gelof of the Oakland Athletics and Jake Gelof of the Los Angeles Dodgers have left Sesame Street by the Sea for spring training, which begins Feb. 14 for pitchers and Feb. 19 full squad. Charles Casas (Cape) is the team leader in kills, 62, for the Hood College (4-4) men's volleyball team. Charles is listed as an outside hitter. The Lover’s Lane Valentines 5K scurried in no hurry along the wet Rehoboth Boardwalk Feb. 11 and produced 102 finishers and an assortment of water dogs. The weather vacillated from misty to drizzly. Bernie and Kathleen Gallagher finished last together, earning the so sweet and so cool award. Go on now, git!
