Sussex Tech Adult Ed adds articulation programs for high school students
Sussex Tech Adult Ed offers the following articulation programs for seniors at Sussex Technical High School: phlebotomy technician program, forklift certification training and marine service technology.
In its second year, the phlebotomy technician program is available to health professions, dental services and physical therapy/athletic healthcare students. The semester-long course begins with virtual classes and ends with in-person laboratory work where students complete 10 capillary sticks and 30 live venipunctures, the requirement to sit for the phlebotomy technician certificate.
New for this school year, articulation courses are offered in forklift certification training and marine service technology. Students completing the four-hour forklift operation program satisfy OSHA-compliant forklift training requirements. Those completing the semester-long marine service technology program earn a half-credit on their technology transcript and the first certificate toward becoming a certified Yamaha outboard technician.
Administrators are finalizing the details for a patient care technician articulation program.
High school students from other Sussex County school districts as well as Sussex Tech are preparing for a successful future by taking Sussex Tech Adult Ed evening classes for certified nursing assistant or certified medical assistant requirements. Spring classes are currently in session, and participating high school students received tuition assistance from a Department of Labor grant. Sussex Tech Adult Ed officials hope to receive a grant to continue to help students enrolled in the fall semester.
When asked how participating in an articulation program benefits a student, Kelly Whaley, director of Sussex Tech Adult Education, said, “Adult Education’s articulation agreements with Sussex Technical High School benefit the students by giving them an opportunity to stack their credentials, ultimately making themselves more marketable upon graduation.”
Sussex Tech is a public high school that prepares Sussex County students in grades 9-12 for their future success in workforce environments, higher education and the military.
