Sussex Tech students prepare for Skills USA state competition

Sussex Technical High School hosted a career technical education internal competition Jan. 18 to prepare students for the SkillsUSA state competitions scheduled for March.

Participating in events showcasing their skills, knowledge and creativity were students from Carpentry and Construction Management; Electrical and Green Energy; Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration; Legal Services and Criminal Justice; Media Production; and Welding and Fabrication technology. 

Volunteer judges included representatives from local businesses, advisory committee members, alumni and retired educators.

The state SkillsUSA competition will be held in March in various locations throughout the state. First-place winners at the state level will compete at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in Atlanta, Ga., in June, where more than 6,500 state champions will compete in 114 skilled and leadership competitions.

Earning awards during the Jan. 18 CTE competition were:

Crime Scene Investigation - first place, Antonia McCoy, Dakota Dunston and Jacklynn Gross; second place, Mia Tritapoe, Emma Hudson and Otis Carmean. 

Criminal Justice - first place, Floyd Moore; second place, Justin Garcia-Nataren; third place, Estrella Serrano-Tovar.

Electrical Construction Wiring - first place, Bryan Hatch; second place, Angel Garcia Prado; third place, Ryan Maharaj.

Industrial Motor Control - first place, John Olakowski; second place, Kara Fleming; third place, Andrew Olakowski.

Carpentry - first place, Ayla Taylor, 10th grade; second place, Aiden Parsons, 10th grade; third place, Nathan Robshaw, 10th grade.

Photography - first place, Karime Lagunas-Alcantara; second place, Clara Robinson; third place, Erin Wilson. 

Digital Cinema Production - first place, Landon Ferrell and Gadiel Lopez-Garcia; second place, Isaiah Moyer and Jackson Thomas; third place, Destiny Toby and Izabella Knoepfel.

Video Production - first place, Harley Read and Samuel Kratohwill; Audio Production - first place, Mya Boroi and Josue Turcios-Miron; Video News Production - first place, Ava Amidon, Ava Maloney, Abby Huston and Natalie Scott; second place, Ryan Koslowski, Aiyla Harmon, Samantha Geidel and Annabelle Bostic.

Welding - first place, Cohen Bowers, 10th grade; second place, Roberto Perez-Barrios, 10th grade; third place, Madisyn Dipasquale, 11th grade.

HVAC/R - first place, Ryan Allen, 11th grade; second place, Brayden Long, 12th grade; third place, Malachi Simmons, 11th grade.
