Sussex Tech superintendent addresses Georgetown chamber
Dr. Kevin E. Carson, Sussex County Vocational Technical School District superintendent, addressed Georgetown Chamber of Commerce members during their Dec. 14 meeting.
During his Sussex Tech update, Carson reported the current school population is 1,296 students. As the high school has more students wanting to attend than available seats, the school’s admission process is through a lottery. The lottery application period opened in November and will close Wednesday, Jan. 11.
Sussex Tech’s high-quality vocational-technical programs, school culture and safety, academic success and adult education partnership are reasons why students want to attend. The work-based learning experience and the opportunity to graduate with both career and college readiness are additional attractions.
Sussex Tech offers 18 career technical education programs, including welding and fabrication, a six-credit program added for the 2022-23 school year. Welding is a high-demand program in both Sussex Tech High School and Sussex Tech Adult Education. Sussex Tech Adult Ed added a heavy equipment operator apprenticeship for spring 2023 and will also add a CDL Training program for those who wish to earn a commercial driver's license in fall 2023.
In 2020, the General Assembly approved funding for a new Sussex Technical High School. Sussex Tech faculty, staff and students, Sussex Tech’s board of education and members of technical advisory committees have met with architects and designers to discuss needs and improvements for the new building. “It is a very exciting time at Tech,” said Carson. “We will move from a building constructed in 1959 to a modern school. Research is being conducted to ensure funds are being spent effectively as we move into a 21st century building.”
The Sussex Tech district has contracted with ABHA and BSA+A architect teams for the for the new building design. The building will be constructed at the school’s current location by the RYJ Construction Management Team.
Sussex Tech is a public school which prepares Sussex County students in grades 9-12 for their future success in both higher education and workforce environments.
