True Blue Jazz musicians hold clinic with Cape band students

October 25, 2024

Two members of the True Blue Jazz Band visited Cape Henlopen High School to offer tips to students on strengthening their music.

Frederick “Freddie” Hendrix plays the trumpet, while Bruce Williams plays the alto saxophone. Both men have shown off their talents for some of the largest jazz bands in the country.

Prior to their weekend of fun events as part of the True Blue Jazz Festival, Hendrix and Williams joined the Cape Henlopen High School Jazz Band to give advice. The band performed a few songs, along with solos from CJ Schaffer on trombone, Reed Williamson on tenor saxophone and Julia Burrell on alto saxophone.

At the beginning of the clinic, the musicians provided various assistance to sections, working for better intonation, volume, breathing techniques, transitions and dynamics.

While teaching the students about jazz music, they also demonstrate the deeper meaning of music.

“We are the music. We are the sound,” Hendrix said. “The instruments are just an amplification of that.”
