It’s not about wins and losses; it’s about breaking barriers and creating meaningful connections.
Cape Henlopen School District excels in unified sports, providing students opportunities to compete, grow and build friendships in an inclusive environment. The program continues to thrive under the leadership of coach Katie Collick and her incredible team of assistant coaches, paraprofessionals, managers, announcers, bus drivers and referees. Their dedication and passion create an atmosphere where every athlete – partner and player alike – feels valued and supported.
As a parent, watching my son be part of Cape Henlopen’s unified basketball team has been one of the most rewarding experiences. As a partner on the team, he has grown tremendously, not just as an athlete, but also as a person. He’s learned the true meaning of teamwork, inclusion and leadership in ways no classroom could teach. The friendships he has built and the joy he feels as part of something bigger than himself are incredible.
Beyond just our family, this team has profoundly impacted my son’s grandparents. They look forward to every game, calling it the best thing about winter. Watching these athletes play with such heart and sportsmanship restores their faith in the younger generation. They see kindness, encouragement and joy on the court, reminding them of the power of community and connection.
What makes unified basketball unique is how it brings out the best in everyone involved. The players support and encourage one another, the coaches lead with passion and care, and the fans fill the gym with pride far beyond the final score. It’s about celebrating effort, teamwork and the pure love of the game. It’s about creating a space where everyone, regardless of ability, belongs.
Cape Henlopen’s commitment to unified sports is truly special, and I hope more schools and communities follow its lead. This program is shaping young people into compassionate leaders and reminding us of all what sports should really be about – connection, inclusion and joy.
