Union Wesley UMC camp events to start June 22
Union Wesley United Methodist Church will host a variety of events to celebrate its 175th Annual Camp Meeting Anniversary Appreciation.
It is hard to believe that the forefathers sacrificed so much to create, under the power of almighty God, the Union Wesley Campground in 1844. It is the oldest campground still in existence in Delaware, and is a powerful testament of faithfulness and resilience for those who love the Lord.
This 175th anniversary reveals the faithfulness of the church down through the years to keep the campground alive. The church continues to live out its dream and hope for the future. To honor this special occasion, there will be nightly preaching, music, fellowship and food.
The Waiting on Jesus gospel band will perform in concert at 6 p.m., Saturday, June 22.
Bishop Peggy Johnson, resident bishop of the Peninsula-Delaware Conference, will preach during the morning celebration at 11 a.m., Sunday, June 23.
A recognition luncheon honoring the 2019 Camp Meeting preachers for their faithfulness to Union Wesley will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 29.
This year’s honorees include the Rev. Dr. Jeanel Starling, the Rev. George Edwards Sr., the Rev. Rory Russell, the Rev. Anthony Mumford, the Rev. Jacqueline E. Wilson, Apostle Helena Bailey, the Rev. Jerome E. Tilghman Sr., the Rev. Marjorie Belmont-Burns, the Rev. Timothy Duffield Sr., Elder Naomi Wescot and Apostle Tambara Stewart.
Tickets to the luncheon are $40 for adults, $17 for ages 12 to 17, and $7 for ages 6-11.
A trombone recital and songs by Lucinda Allen and the Union Wesley adult choir is set for 6 p.m., Saturday, July 13. Freewill offerings will be collected to benefit the campground. All events will be held in the church sanctuary.
The campground will officially be launched with preaching each night at 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, July 20 and 21. It will resume Friday, July 26 to Sunday, Aug, 4, when the Rev. Gary Meekins will close out the campground with a service at 3:30 p.m.
